THE BEES KNOW - A large beehive that was built this summer is about five feet off the ground.
SOUTH WOODSTOCK — Thursday evening, December 9, 9:15 p.m.
I need to make a correction about Alan Hadley leaving for duty. He is currently with the 251 Sapper Co. in the Maine Army National Guard in Norway. He did volunteer for deployment but has not heard back from them. With so much going on around us the day I was talking with Alan, I misunderstood what he was telling me. Thank you Alan for getting in touch with me on this so I could make the correction.
Yogi and I want to thank Alan for his concern and support last week, it was greatly appreciated.
We went to visit some friends the first of the week at the nursing home, and are looking forward to popping in on them again Sunday.
It was great getting to enjoy some time with our nieces Christine and Sherry last week; we all had supper at Market Square Restaurant.
Brrrrrrrr - it is only 16 degrees here right now. Overheard a gentleman telling one of the cashiers at Walmart today that we are supposed to get a lot of real cold weather and not much snow this winter. I hope we get some snow for those folks that like to ski and snowmobile, they invest a lot of money to enjoy their winter activities. And I surely hope we do not get all that bitter cold weather. Some states are already getting more snow then they know what to do with it.
The cold temperatures in Florida will truly drive the fruit prices up. Hope it gets back to more seasonable weather down there, as we sure do enjoy the nice seedless navel oranges we order from Florida.
As I recall from my dad, grandfathers and uncles, one could pretty much tell what kind of winter we would have by the bees. My uncle (Arthur Whitman), who was a farmer on Billings Hill many years ago, told us that if you find beehives built high off the ground, that meant we were in for a lot of snow, but if they built them lower to the ground we would not get much snow. I took a photo of a large beehive that was built this summer and it was only about five feet off the ground. They decided to build it in between the rungs of our ladder that hung under the eves. A friend of Craig's is gonna come over and take it down.
Well the temperature has dropped another degree, so it looks like it is truly going to be a real cold and crispy morning tomorrow.
Stay warm and healthy.
