Mechanic Falls

MECHANIC FALLS — When you read this, the “Royal Wedding of the Century” will have taken place and been viewed by billions of people across the globe, which pretty much places anyone else of royal descent that decides to get married in the next 89 years at the bottom of the wanna-be pile. Royal Wedding of the Decade? Um. Boring.

It seems many Americans want to identify with the Brits and their titles of Lord and Duke and Duchess and Princess. Maybe because nothing even comes close to that here in the States. I think it’s because we’re still a relatively young country. We don’t have nobles or barons dating back a thousand years and the only person we refer to as King wore white sequined bell bottoms said things like “hunka-hunka burnin’ love" while eating a peanut-butter-and-nana sandwich. Never mind the fact we have zero castles. We can thank our monarchy-hating founding fathers for that one.

Still, the United Kingdom and its royals hold a certain level of fascination for some of us. I admit, I was one of the billions that got up early. I made the pot of British tea and ate the homemade scones. I regaled in the pomp and circumstance of horse-drawn carriages and choir boys singing while sipping sparkling cider and eating little cucumber sandwiches. Sure, my daughters and I did this in our pjs sitting on our humble little furniture in our humble little living room, but still, for a moment we were part of history and splendor and majesty and love and happily ever after. Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I just like this stuff because I think it’s pretty. And I am a girl.

Speaking of history, the Mechanic Falls Historical Society is hosting a number of events coming up in May. On Saturday, May 7 it will be hosting another “Almost Famous Roast Beef Community Supper” from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The cost is $7 per person, $5 for children 12 and under. The Society would like to thank Future Foods and Harvest Hill Farms for their assistance in putting on this supper.

On Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m., the Society will host WCSH’s Bill Green, who will speak on the topic of Maine and the Civil War, highlighting Joshua Chamberlain’s life both on and off the battlefield. There will be a Q & A session with Bill Green following his talk. There is no charge for this event.

Lastly, on Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., there will be an Open House at the Society. Come view the town’s historical artifacts and articles. The Historical Society is located at 64 Elm Street in Mechanic Falls. For more information call 345-3134.

If you have an event to promote or a story to tell, e-mail me at mitsou7@msn.com. I wonder if anyone would think it weird if I wore a tiara the next time I went box-store shopping.
