North Norway
NORTH NORWAY — We were coming down Upton Brothers Road one day recently and were thrilled to see an Eagle sitting on a branch, king of all he surveyed. I know there are Eagles down on the lake but never saw one up there when we lived there.
This sure isn't a spring like last year. We had to go to Portland to keep an appointment yesterday and like to have blown off the turnpike, the wind was that fierce, and it hailed, sleeted, snowed and rained. I had no desire to do any shopping so we kept the appointment, ate lunch and came home. With the price of gas one feels guilty if you do not combine a few errands each trip.
Dell has started the outside cleanup today. His tractor isn't fixed yet as we had to wait on a part. It's taking so long we wonder if it's made in Japan and they are out of production right now. We have been promised a fix tomorrow. Here's hoping.
Mary and Frank Perham had friends from New Hampshire over last Saturday to help inventory and photograph some of their mineral specimens for insurance purposes. They broke for lunch at Crosstone's; corn chowder was delicious, then back to work.
Monday was their 56th wedding anniversary so they took the day off and did some errands, visited Mary Groves and were planning on going to Cindy's Dockside for lunch. Found out they were not open on Mondays so they went over to Cole Farms which was very busy. Good food brings in the customers. They had a gift certificate for Home Depot so they they spent it and wandered around the store and managed to spend some more. It was a good day for getting away for awhile.
Thursday they had company from Rockland. They are interested in mining and bought a piece of land on Noyes Mountain from Frank and Mary. They were staying at the Mollyockett Motel and they all went to Crosstone's for supper and a pleasant time.
Charlie Verrill has worked up some garden space and is awaiting the proper time to plant, whenever that will be. Time to get the peas in.
I can see Dell out the window working in the rhubarb patch. He tells me it is beginning to come up so we look forward to some rhubarb sauce before too long.
Judi Andrews tells me "Six" is crawling all over the place and has a vocabulary also. Dan and Kara have a new black lab puppy, as if they were not busy enough with Six but it must be fun. He opened his Easter Basket Deven and Judi sent him while he was on Skype so they saw his reaction. He liked the wrapping paper as much as the contents. That is normal at his age. We miss him but perhaps he will be here this fall when Ian and Lyndsay are married. It's a long flight from Hawaii. We would like to go out but everything you hear about flying now is not encouraging. I am not up to sleeping in airports or standing in long lines. Maine is a pretty good place to be right now.
From a book published in 1875:
"Give me the money that has been spent in war and I will purchase every foot of land on the globe. I will clothe every man, woman and child in an attire of which kings and queens would be proud. I will build a schoolhouse in every valley and a church on every hill."
What we could do with the money spent on war now.
