Mechanic Falls news

MECHANIC FALLS — Well, that January thaw we had lasted all of three days. Just in time to get the final Christmas decorations in from outside. Mechanic Falls has her ugly dress on. Don’t get all riled up about this, what I mean by this is it’s that time of year when the snow banks are blackened with dirt and the trees are shabbily shivering away in the arctic breeze. The salt-stained roads seem bleak and desolate. Cars have that winter coating of grime because it’s too cold to hit the car wash on the way home from work. I don’t mean any disrespect to my little village when I say this. It’s like me putting on my holey sweater and paint slicked jeans because the holidays are over, I’ve put on a couple of pounds and I just want to be comfortable. I know it’s only temporary. Soon, I’ll get the itch again to begin some project I’ve been putting off or I’ll want to tackle that new hobby I’ve been meaning to try. Mechanic Falls will be dressed up and green again.

I’ve been reading and hearing talk of town leaders having discussions about the influence the recently approved casino to be built in Oxford may have on surrounding towns. Certainly the close proximity of Mechanic Falls to the casino (five miles?) will have some type of impact, but it’s anyone’s guess what that might be. I’d like to hear from Mechanic Falls readers what you think that impact might be. For some, this may be the light at the end of a very long tunnel. For others, it may be the end of the world as we know it and Armageddon is right around the corner. Regardless, it will be fun watching this play out.

E-mail me at mitsou7@msn.com for your thoughts. Also, if you have an event you would like to promote I will write about it. Oh, if you meet me up at Future Foods or see me at the library, I’m sorry about the sweater and the jeans. It’s winter and it’s temporary.
