  • What I've Learned

If it's 7 a.m. here, what time is it on the moon?

NASA, like the U.S. Military, operates off of what is called Zulu time. Zulu is another name for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, the time in Greenwich, England) which is another name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

The reason for this, is that if you have soldiers (or scientists) in different parts of the world – and hence in different times zones – and something is supposed to happen at a specific time, the chance of confusion is great. (Is that six o'clock my time or your time?)

The following are bills that have been recently introduced to the state legislature by local senators and representatives (in parenthesis). None have yet been voted into law; most have been assigned to committees for consideration and the scheduling of public hearings. To learn more about these bills, or to express an opinion, citizens are encouraged to contact their elected representatives or the state legislature.

  • What I've Learned

Classroom education in this country – in the world, for that matter – is about to be turned on its ear.

It started with a hedge fund analyst helping his young cousins with their homework.

To make sure they understood the math he was helping them with, Salman Khan made some simple videos – just his voice explaining some examples as he worked them using a computer drawing program. Khan posted the videos on YouTube.

  • The Colding

Gnarled branches, clutching, seeking any heat,

    Stark-webbed across a grayling dawn;

What sky I saw was glacial; summer gone,

Reflecting only winter at its feet.

    And nothing moved.

Gray mice and moles beneath the snow,

All huddled, grasping any warmth they could

To keep the virgin hearts alive.

    Throughout the wood

The hoary breath of chickadees hung low

Around the birds, like misty shields against the cold.

By noon the day was old.

  • What I've Learned

Last Wednesday morning, I checked the top stories on Google News and found this headline: Michigan Ranked Least Happiest State In Nation.

The use of "least happiest" caused Quin the cat, who was sitting on my lap, to look up at me.

"That's the most stupidest headline I've read in weeks," his look seemed to say. I agreed.

For his amusement and mine, I clicked on the link. It brought us to the website of WHTC television in Holland, Michigan, which had posted this poorly-edited story:

  • What I've Learned

In the film Queen of Sports, Lin Ying, an athletic but untrained country girl, comes to Shanghai to attend college. Her track coach turns out to be the brother of a childhood friend. This handsome (though solemn and brooding) fellow not only makes her heart go pitter-pat, he teaches her the fundamentals of competitive running, including how to place her hands on the starting chalk line, how to rise from a kneeling to a ready position, and how to step off properly for the fastest start.

Lin soaks all this up and begins, thanks to hard work and natural talent, to win races.

Colorectal Cancer might be one of those things we don’t want to think about.

But if you take a few minutes to read some of the following information, you might find that it is worth your time.
