Columns

  • At Work in Augusta

This week, no bills were newly introduced by our local reps, but many previously-introduced bills will be discussed during public hearings and work sessions. A bill that has achieved this stage of the process has a greater chance of passing than a bill that has merely been introduced. Citizens are encouraged to voice their opinions directly to their reps, or at the relevant public hearing.

  • What I've Learned

You don't need me to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway. Don't look at the Sun.

And definitely don't look at the Sun through binoculars.

    Instead, do this.

Hold the binoculars — or a small telescope — to one side of your body, aim them at the sun, and let the light from the eyepiece land on a sheet of paper. (Again, I emphasis, the binoculars are nowhere near your eyes in this process.) Adjust the distance of the paper from the eyepiece until the image of the sun appears in focus on the paper.

  • What I've Learned

In 2005, I published a collection of "What I've Learned" columns.

I selected 48 columns, some funny enough to make me laugh aloud, some moving enough to make me cry, some interesting enough to make me read them a third time, even though I'd written them all to begin with.

"This is going to be great," I said.

Because it was more a labor of love than a serious money-making venture, I decided to print the books on my laser printer and bind them by hand.

The following are bills that have been recently introduced to the state legislature by local senators and representatives (in parenthesis). None have yet been voted into law; most have been assigned to committees for consideration and the scheduling of public hearings. To learn more about these bills, or to express an opinion, citizens are encouraged to contact their elected representatives or the state legislature.

  • What I've Learned

California will eventually have a massive earthquake, break off, and drop into the ocean.

    I used to believe that.

    Silly unthinking me.

The San Andreas Fault is where two giant tectonic plates, the Pacific Plate and North American Plate, are rubbing against each other.

The San Andreas Fault System crosses California from the Salton Sea in the south to Cape Mendocino in the north. The Pacific Plate is moving northwest at a couple of inches per year. But that rate is an average, not a steady motion.
