What I've Learned
May 26, 2011 12:00 amMy imagination has been stretched, causing me to shake my head in wonder.
Do you know what a rogue planet is? It's one that has broken free of its star's influence and is floating on its own in the deep reaches of space.
Rogue planets, it was thought, were like rogue elephants, few in number, exceptions, solitary wanderers not part of any herd.

May 19, 2011 12:00 amLet me give you a sobriety test. If you can sing the first verse of "To Anacreon in Heaven," pronouncing each word clearly and staying in tune, you will be declared sober.
Most people today don't know To Anacreon in Heaven, so police find it easier and more legally defensible to use Breathalyzers to measure blood alcohol levels. But there was a time in England when singing To Anacreon in Heaven--or The Anacreontic Song, as is formally known--to be a simple and effective test of whether one was clear-headed enough to be served another round or not.

May 19, 2011 12:00 amThis week, no bills were newly introduced by our local reps, but one previously-introduced bill will be discussed during a work session. A bill that has achieved this stage of the process has a greater chance of passing than a bill that has merely been introduced. Citizens are encouraged to voice their opinions directly to their reps, or at the relevant public hearing.

May 12, 2011 12:00 amSomebody finds a picture of a wide-eyed kitten standing on its hind legs and pawing the air.
While struggling to come up with a funny caption for the picture, the person hears the news that Osama bin Laden is dead. The caption almost writes itself.
"Osama bin Laden," the kitten is made to say, "I hates that guy. He used to eaten kittens like me."
The captioner attaches his creation to an email and sends it to 20 friends and relatives.

May 05, 2011 12:00 amThe batter hit the ball. The order of those words tells us what happened.
If we take the same five words and change the order – The ball hit the batter – the order again tells us what happened.
It is possible, though, to put those words in an order that befuddles our understanding.
Ball batter the the hit.
When it comes to describing the hitting of a ball, sports announcers have some wonderful variations, all of which we readily understand.
