  • Girl Scout parent info is tonight

    WATERFORD — Girl Scouts of Maine will be hosting a parent information and registration meeting on Thursday, November 8, at 6 p.m. at the Waterford Memorial School in Waterford.

    Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different and fun ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best.

    Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

  • Cans for Cubs

    OXFORD HILLS — The Cub Scouts of Paris, Norway and Hebron are accepting donations of can goods and unopened hygiene products for the local food bank. Pack 130 will have donation boxes at the following locations: Don's Redemption Center, Norway Town Office, Guy E, Rowe School, Paris Elementary, Oxford Hills Middle School and Hebron Station.

    They will be collecting the products on November 8 for delivery to the food pantry on the following day. Because Thanksgiving is right around the corner, the food bank representative stated Thanksgiving items are appreciated.

  • Waterford fair meeting slated

    WATERFORD — The November meeting of the Waterford World's Fair Association will be held at the Waterford Town office on Sunday, November 11 at 2 p.m.

    The town office is located on Route 35 in Waterford. The meeting is open to anyone that is interested in the Waterford World's Fair.

    This meeting will be covering the Fair's winter schedule for the suppers and where they will be held. For more information, call President Dana Hemingway at 595-2430.

    WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 8 for a potluck supper at the North Waterford Church. It will be the final meeting for the year. The program will be local music, featuring members of the Jones Dance Band and a few other musical treats. The program begins at 7 p.m. and the evening is free.

    Church Women

    OTISFIELD — Church Women United will meet on Friday, November 2, at 9:30 a.m. at the Community of Resurrection in Otisfield. This is World Community Day and the program is "Sights and Sounds of Harmony." All are welcome and refreshments will be served. To carpool, meet at 8:45 a.m. at St. Catherine's Church in Norway.

  • GOP gives gift

    OXFORD COUNTY — During the Oxford and Fryeburg Fairs, all attendees might have noticed that the Oxford County Republican Committee (OCRC) had at its booth a donation jar set aside to collect monies in support of the Oxford Helping Hands Food Pantry.

    They are now pleased to report that the amount collected was $160, which has been presented in the form of a check to Suzanne Grover, President and founder of this group, by Tom Curtis, Chairman of the OCRC.

    AARP

    SOUTH PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet on Monday, October 29, at the First Congregational Church on East Main Street in South Paris. Dinner will be served at noon and will include beef stroganoff with noodles, vegetables and their delicious dessert.

    The cost is $6.50 and reservations are required by calling Ruth at 744-9069 by Friday, October 26. The business meeting will begin at 1 p.m. with the program to be announced.

    Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

  • Author to speak in Bethel

    BETHEL — Don Perkins, author of the recently released book, "The Barns of Maine: Our History, Our Stories," will discuss the history of Maine's barns, which went through three basic phases or periods, at the Bethel Historical Society on Wednesday, November 7, at 1 p.m.

    Using historic and contemporary images, he also will illuminate regional trends in the construction of barns throughout Maine. A former carpenter and woodworker with a longtime interest in timber framing, Perkins has been a freelance writer since 2005 and has lived near Sebago Lake in Raymond since 1994.
