  • Oxford County Democrats recognize volunteers

    RUMFORD — The Oxford County Democrats will hold a Volunteer Recognition dinner at the Eagles Hall on Oxford Avenue in Rumford on Thursday, January 20, with a snow date of January 27. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a chicken dinner. Volunteers in the 2010 campaign will be the guests of the Oxford County Democrats, and others who would like to attend will be charged $7 per person.   • Knitting Guild to meet

    SOUTH PARIS — The Western Maine Knitting Guild will have its annual planning meeting on Tuesday, January 4, at the First Congregational Church in South Paris. In case of a storm - if there is no school, there will be no meeting.

  • Oxford County Republicans to meet

    NORWAY — Oxford County Republicans will meet on Tuesday, January 11, for the purpose of electing new Officers. Officer positions are Chairman, Male Vice-Chairman, Female Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Finance Director. The meeting will take place at the Masonic Hall, 9 Temple St. in Norway, one block off Main St between Danforth and Cottage St. Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and business beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Loretta Mikols at republican@earthlink.net or 875-2229.

  • VFW plans public breakfast

    HARRISON — VFW Post #9328 on Waterford Road in Harrison will host its monthly public breakfast on Sunday, January 9, from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Breakfasts are held on the second Sunday of each month. The popular breakfast includes scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes, biscuits with country gravy, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, sweet breads, coffee, tea, hot cocoa and OJ. Donations are appreciated.

  • Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club news

    WILTON — On Sunday, January 9, the Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club is co-hosting square and round dancing with Friendship Square of Wilton from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Cushing School in Wilton. Al Hipkins, Swingin' Bears Club Caller will be calling Mainstream and Plus levels of square dancing and Carol Stewart will be calling the round dancing. Admission is $6 per person for dancers and no charge for non-dancers wishing to see what fun this activity is.

  • Pizza night to benefit Rotary scholarship

    NEWRY — On Wednesday, February 2, from 6-9 p.m., Rotary Club of Bethel will inaugurate All-You-Can-Eat Pizza night at the Matterhorn, Sunday River Road in Newry. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased in advance from any club member or at the door. Proceeds benefit Rotary's Scholarship fund to be given in honor of Rocky Freda.

  • Socrates Café to meet at the Waterford library

    WATERFORD — A Socrates Café gathering will be held at the Waterford Library on Monday, January 3, 2011from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome.

    The topic for the January meeting is "Does Beauty Matter?" Ed Somers will be the moderator.
