    AARP

    PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet on Monday, February 11 at the First Congregational Church on E. Main Street, South Paris. Lunch will be served at 12 noon and will include oven baked chicken with all the fixings. The cost is $6.50 and reservations are required by calling Ruth at 744-9069 by Friday, February 8.

  • Bethel Historical program underway

    BETHEL — The Bethel Historical Society’s Business Partner’s program for 2013 is now underway, with letters highlighting the benefits of membership in BHS having been mailed to some 60 area businesses.

    As one of the leading cultural institutions of its type in northern New England, the Society realizes that this ranking is, in large part, because of the support received from the business community in the Bethel area and beyond.

    Democrats

    COUNTY — The Oxford County Democrats held their organizational meeting for the 2013-2014 period and reelected Cathy Newell of Greenwood as chair, Mike Broderick of Bethel as Vice-Chair/Chair’s Designee for the Democratic State Committee, and Roy Gedat of Norway as Treasurer.

    In other business, Rep. Sheryl Briggs of Mexico gave a short legislative report, and plans were announced for a Volunteer Recognition event on February 18 at the Oxford Casino.

  • Foster-Carroll meeting held

    PARIS — South Paris Foster-Carroll Legion and Auxiliary 72 met for a potluck supper and business meeting on January 9, with two guests interested in joining the Auxiliary. President Carol Gould led the business meeting welcoming Nora Olson and Stephanie Fournier, who were voted in as new members.

    The Unit's Charter was draped in honor of recently deceased members Edna Tobin, who had been a member for 40 years, and for Elsie Pechnik, who was an active member for 22 years.

  • Activities planned at Legion Post 112

    OXFORD — The American Legion Post 112, Oxford, has the following activities scheduled in January and February.

    Friday, January 25 - Texas Hold’em, start time 6:15 p.m. sharp, doors open at 5 p.m., $35, BYOB, open kitchen. Sponsored by Sons of the American Legion.

    Saturday, January 26 – Bingo, doors open at 4 p.m., games start at 6 p.m., open kitchen, hot meals.

    Friday, February 1, Pre-teen Valentine’s Day dance $5, 6:30–9:30 p.m., doors open at 5:30 p.m., door prizes, dancing contests, open kitchen.

    Seniors

    BETHEL — On Wednesday, February 13, at 11 a.m. the Bethel Senior Citizens will meet at the Funky Red Barn for a meeting and dinner. The dinner is a choice of roast beef or haddock and the price is $12. Reservations must be made before January 31, by calling Caroline Gould at 824-3226 or Arlene Lowell at 824-2877.

  • Mother, son dance slated

    PARIS — On Friday, January 25, a Mother and Son Dance, no age limit, will be held at the South Paris American Legion. The dance will start at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.

    Tickets prices are $12 per mother and son; if you have more than one son, the total price is $15. Tickets are available at Guy E. Rowe School, Paris Elementary School and at Books N Things in Norway.

    All proceeds will help send the youth of the community involved in Pack 130 to summer camp this year.

  • Bethel Historical Society

    BETHEL — Fortunately for the Bethel Historical Society, as well as the community in general, Stan Howe’s recent retirement doesn’t mean he’s leaving the Historical Society.

    On the contrary, he plans to volunteer on a regular basis, and thanks to the receipt by BHS of grants from The Betterment Fund, The Bingham Foundation and The Bingham Trust, he’ll continue to work on a biography of William Bingham 2nd as a Society-sponsored project.

  • Dems to meet

    BETHEL — The Oxford County Democratic Committee will hold its organizational meeting for the 2013-2014 cycle on Sunday, January 20, at 4 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Crescent Park School, Crescent Lane in Bethel.

    The election of officers will be held with the positions of Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary elected for two-year terms, as well as the Chair's Designee to the Democratic State Committee.
