  • GOP election offices opened

    OXFORD/RUMFORD — The Oxford County Republican Committee proudly announces the opening of two General Election offices in Oxford County. One of those offices is located in the Town of Oxford, at 1548 Main Street, also known as Route 26.

    The second office, and in a location that has never had one prior to now, is at 134 Congress Street in Rumford. The Oxford office coordinator is Delian Valeriani, who can be reached at delianval@hotmail.com, while the Rumford office coordinator is Candice Casey, who can be reached at candiceanne1961@yahoo.com.

    LEWISTON — Mended Hearts, a patient-run support group for heart disease patients and their families, will meet on Thursday, September 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Young Wing First-Floor Conference Room, located near the main entrance to Central Maine Medical Center. There is no charge for participation.

    Anyone interested in learning more about Mended Hearts is urged to call 795-8230 or e-mail StroutCh@cmhc.org.

    Mended Hearts is affiliated with the American Heart Association.

  • Paris Cape Historical Society to meet

    SOUTH PARIS — Members and friends of the Paris Cape Historical Society will meet at 77 High Street, South Paris on Thursday, September 20 at 7 p.m. After a brief business meeting, Jeffrey R. Parsons of Ann Arbor, MI and South Paris will speak on working girls from South Paris, 1845 – 1964.

    Jane Robinson Stevens (1829–1917) was the granddaughter of Dr. Cyprian Stevens (one of the earliest doctors in Oxford County), and the daughter of Simon S. Stevens and Nancy French – all of South Paris.

  • Otisfield Historical Society to meet

    OTISFIELD — Henry Hamilton, President of the Otisfield Historical Society, will be at the podium for the Society’s next meeting on Thursday, September 6, at the Otisfield Town Hall. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

    Though born in Otisfield, Henry spent three years in Alabama while in graduate school. During that time, he realized that Otisfield was about as strange a place to Alabamians as Timbuktu.

  • Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19

    STONEHAM — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, Hannah F. Richardson Tent, 19 of Stoneham, held their August meeting in the Community Room in Stoneham on August 22.

    The meeting was called to order by President Marilyn Jones. Sylvia Grover was appointed patriotic instructor in the absence of Wanda Ryerson who has recently moved to South Carolina.

    The mystery prize was won by Elaine Lagueux.

  • Swingin' Bears offer beginner lessons

    SOUTH PARIS — This is the time of year when those who have ever considered learning to square dance or those who have square danced in the past and would like to get back into it have the opportunity to try it out free of charge.

    The Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club of South Paris is offering three free square dance lessons for beginners at the Oxford Hills Middle School, Pine Street in South Paris, beginning Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m.

  • Swingin' Bears plan dance

    SOUTH PARIS — The Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club will have Joseph Fabian calling Mainstream and Plus levels for the square dancing on Saturday night, September 8, 7–10 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Middle School, 100 Pine St. in South Paris.

    Bernie Porter will cue for the round dancing.

    Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be door prizes, as well as a 50/50 drawing.

    Admission is $6 per person. Non-dancers are welcome at no charge.

  • 12-step group to meet

    OXFORD — Is life getting you down? Are you struggling with spending, diet, internet use, anger management, pornography, gambling, divorce or separation?

    Join a 12-step discussion group at the Oxford Advent Christian Church, 1130 Main St., Route 26 in Oxford. Registration fee is $15. The group meets Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning September 10.

  • Maple Ridge Cemetery plans annual meeting

    HEBRON — The 2012 annual meeting of the Maple Ridge Cemetery Association, of Hebron, will be held on Sunday, September 16 at 1 p.m. at 78 Greenwood Mountain Rd., Hebron.

    Important business will be on the agenda, including election of Officers and Trustees. All Officers, Trustees, and interested parties are invited to attend.
