    BETHEL — The Bethel Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, at the West Bethel Grange Hall for a meeting and dinner. Reservations must be made before October 3, by calling Caroline at 824-3226 or Arlene at 824-2877. The price of the dinner is $10.

  • Historical Society plans meeting

    OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will meet at the museum for a brief meeting at 6 p.m. Friday, September 28, then carpool to the 1st Baptist Church of Paris for a program given by Rev. Mary Beth Caffey on the history of the Church.

    Refreshments will be served after the program in the downstairs hall.

  • Girl Scouts parent information night set

    OTISFIELD — Girl Scouts of Maine will be hosting a parent information and registration meeting on Friday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Spurrs Corner Church, Route 121 in Otisfield.

    Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different and fun ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best.

    Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

  • Society briefed on history of Scribner's Mills

    HEBRON — Marylin Hatch of Scribner's Mills Preservation, Inc. recently briefed the Hebron Historical Society on the history of Scribner’s Mills in Harrison. Built in 1847 on the Crooked River the mill was soon after sold to Elijah Scribner.

    Three generations of his family operated the mill from 1851 to 1962. Besides the usual lumber products of boards, timbers and shingles the mill produced ammunition boxes during the war years and thousands of barrels used for shipment of apples overseas.

  • Cookbook available

    MINOT — The Minot Historical Society has received an overwhelming amount of favorite recipes from local folks; thanks go to all who contributed. The society is now going to start taking pre-orders for the cookbooks.

    The price is $10/book. The cookbooks will be available for pickup at the following locations starting in October (or by contacting them), right in time for the holidays!

    October 9: West Minot Grange Hall, 6 p.m. Minot Historical Society with guest speaker Rachel Desgrosseilliers, "Museum L-A."

  • County Dems meet

    COUNTY — The Oxford County Democrats participated in the Buckfield Labor Day parade and had a booth on the football field.

    Congressman Mike Michaud accompanied Rep. Terry Hayes, Senator John Patrick, Register of Probate candidate Carol Gutekunst and County Treasurer Roy Gedat in the parade and in meeting and greeting the crowd as well as enjoying the great food and fine day.

    County Democratic Chair Cathy Newell, and activists Jimmy McHugh and former Senator Bruce Bryant were on hand to help with the booth.

    NORWAY — Norway Historical Society is sponsoring Coffee with the Curator Saturday, September 22 at 9 a.m. Curator Charles Longley will present an informal program as guests sit around the table enjoying coffee and a treat.

    Curator Longley will provide a close-up look at some of the society’s recent acquisitions and explain research materials available as well as answer questions about the society and Norway’s history.

  • Democrats hold fundraiser

    BETHEL — The Oxford County Democrats held their annual fundraiser at the Mill Hill Inn in Bethel on August 26 and welcomed Maine Democratic Party Chair Ben Grant, Vice-chair Janet Mills, and Democratic National Committeeman Senator Phil Bartlett as speakers.

  • Society examines Chautauqua tonight

    WATERFORD — Every summer the Chautauqua used to come to town and set up a tent on the Waterford Common. But Chautauqua was more than just a tent meeting.

    Come to the September meeting of the Waterford Historical Society and learn about the town in New York and the artistic, educational and spiritual adventure that was launched there and that contributed to the history of Waterford.

    The meeting will be upstairs in the Waterford Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 13. There will be a film and potluck refreshments. There is no charge and all are invited.
