    BETHEL — The Bethel Area Arachnids (BAA) are an informal group of spinners, knitters and other crafters. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the West Parish Congregational Church on Church Street in Bethel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Historical Society offers internship

    BETHEL — The Bethel Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will again offer a History Internship to a qualified high school student this coming July and August. Applications are now available at Telstar Regional High School, Gould Academy, at the Society’s main office (10 Broad St., next to the Bethel Library), and online at www.bethelhistorical.org.

  • April events at Historical Society

    BETHEL — In conjunction with the upcoming exhibit "In the Field & On the Homefront: Bethel During the Civil War,” which opens at the Robinson House in late May, the Bethel Historical Society’s Annual History Symposium, on April 13, will explore how the Civil War is taught in secondary schools, with an emphasis on methods and resources.

    The keynote speaker will be Thomas A. Desjardin, Historian for the Maine Division of Parks & Public Lands.

  • OCSWCD annual meeting, awards scheduled

    PARIS — The public is invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District on Saturday, April 20, at the First Congregational Church of Paris. A time for visiting will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. with program and awards to follow. Glen N. Rea, Chairman of the Maine Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation, will present a program on the importance of finding and saving these historic trees.

  • Paris historical sets meeting

    PARIS — The first 2013 meeting of the Paris Cape Historical Society will take place on Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m. During a short business meeting a nominating committee for new officers for 2013-2014 will be elected.

    Then Ben Conant will speak on the first five men from Paris who signed up as volunteers in the Civil War. He may also include some information on the Underground Railroad.

  • Underground Railroad topic of presentation

    HEBRON — Connie Benwitz of Minot recently briefed the Hebron Historical Society on the use of quilts in the Underground Railroad. As a quilt maker and former librarian, she became fascinated with the history of quilts assisting the journey of slaves escaping southern plantations.

    Finnish-American

    WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple Street in West Paris.

    This, the first meeting of 2013, will begin with a membership potluck dinner followed by the annual meeting and the election of officers.

  • Fire Prevention & Safety to meet

    NORWAY — The Oxford Hills Fire Prevention & Safety will meet on April 10, at 6 p.m. at the Norway Fire Station to elect officers and to pre-plan the safety day schedule for August.

    Members of the Oxford Hills Fire Prevention & Safety are from the area fire departments and communities that have a common concern for education and fire prevention.

    Everyone is welcome to share ideas and participate in the development of this year's activities. For more information, call Al Haggerty at 539-8922.
