  • Alcohol and water don't mix when boating

    WASHINGTON — Statistics compiled by the U.S. Coast Guard show the use of alcohol while boating was the leading contributor to on-the-water accidents.and the needless loss of 126 lives during 2010.

    With the long Fourth of July weekend just ahead of us, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary encourages all boaters to "Boat Responsibly" and be sure you have a designated sober and qualified coxswain on board to ensure your boat gets back to the dock safely. In all, 605 deaths from boating accidents were recorded last year, with July being one of the most hazardous months for boaters.

  • Tennis offered in Norway

    NORWAY — The Norway Recreation Department will be offering Junior and Adult Tennis Clinics this summer. The Junior Tennis Clinic is for ages eight to 18 and will be held at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School tennis courts. There will be two sessions: one from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and the other from 4-5 p.m. on June 27, 28, 29, 30, July 5, 6, 7, and 11. The Adult Tennis Clinic is for ages 18 and above and will be held at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School tennis courts. There will be two sessions: one from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and the other from 4-5 p.m.

  • Oxford Hills B baseball team has successful season

    B BASEBALL TEAM — From left, front, Christian Ricci, Isaac Liimatta, Dylan Allen, Richie Strother, John Higgins, Jacob Spinhirn, Kyle Dexter and Travis Townsend. Back, Coach Brian Cox, Tyler Curtis, Deven Rogers, Ryan Boucher, Ryan Fox, Brandon Smith, Kendall Hill, Dakota Rogers and Ben Leonard. The team finished with seven wins and three losses. Award winners for the team this year are: Offensive Player of the Year, Ryan Fox; Defensive Player of the Year, Kendall Hill and Coaches Award, Jacob Spinhirn.

  • OHMS A softball undefeated

    UNDEFEATED SEASON — The Oxford Hills A Middle School softball team recently completed an undefeated season, finishing 9-0 in the Andy Valley League of Middle School Athletes.   • First foot race run on Roberts trails

    NORWAY — The second race in the Roberts Farm 5k series was run on June 16. The series opener in May was run on Roberts and Pikes Hill roads due to wet ground conditions, so Thursday’s run was the first foot race ever held on the Preserve’s grassed Nordic trails.

  • Register for Harrison 5K

    HARRISON — Cross the finish line in the Harrison Recreation Department 9th annual 5k Run by the Lake on Wednesday, July 6 and receive a whoopie pie.

    Some may remember when this race was very popular for the whoopie pies that were given to all of the runners as they crossed the finish line. Well, they are back by popular demand ... now even more famous as the Whoopie Pie has been recently voted as the official State of Maine snack.

  • 5K race to be run at Roberts Farm Preserve

    NORWAY — The second of a series of chip-timed 5k grass trail runs will take place on Thursday, June 16 at 6 p.m. As conditions were too wet in May to run on the grass trails, this will be the first non-snow race held on the Preserve’s trails. The trails will provide beautiful views of the lake, and a well-rounded challenge for competitors as they are meandering and hilly. Anyone wanting to enter the run should download and fill out a registration and waiver form at www.wfltmaine.org or register on-line at www.runreg.com or just show up at 5:30 p.m. and register on-site.
