  • Fly Fishing Expo set for March 23

    BETHEL — Anglers anxiously awaiting the snow melt, ice out and the opening of fishing season, can learn the latest fishing techniques and visit with guides, sporting camps and a variety of angling exhibitors at the Western Maine Fly Fishing Expo to be held Saturday, March 23 at the Bethel Inn Conference Center in Bethel.

    The Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is sponsored by The Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Upper Andro Anglers Alliance. Admission is $5 for adults and free for youth 15 and under.

  • McGarry to speak at Trout Unlimited meeting

    PARIS — The Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited is proud to announce that renowned Maine fly fisher Rod McGarry will be speaking on Thursday, February 21 in the basement hall of the First Congregational Church in South Paris, which is located on Route 117, just south of Market Square.

    Rod is a Registered Professional Maine Guide, a Board Certified Master Fly Casting Instructor and the staff instructor for LL Bean's Outdoor Discovery Schools.

    Preceding Rod’s talk at 7 p.m. will be a fly tying demonstration at 6 p.m. given by Mollyockett Chapter members.

    AREA — Girls 5/6 Travel Basketball games in the Western Maine Youth Basketball League had the following results on Sunday, February 10.

    Top scorers for Poland were Leya Harvey with nine points and Reily New with eight points. For AYS, Haley Turcotte had eight points and Kaylin Knowlton had five points.

  • Hebron varsity hockey defeats Kents Hill

    HEBRON — Hebron Academy boys' varsity hockey team hosted Kents Hill School recently with a final score of Hebron 3, Kents Hill 2.

    First period goals for Hebron were scored by Steve Donahue, unassisted, at 15:40; Mike Kelly, assisted by Raphael Blouin, at 11:05 and Austin Goldstein, unassisted, at 2:52. For Kents Hill, Caleb Fizer scored at 15:13, assisted by Jared Cockerel.

    In the third period, Filip Akermark scored at 0:22, assisted by Logan Day.

    Kents Hill goalie Ben Eddols had 33 saves on 36 shots; Hebron's Alex Bitsakis had 38 saves on 39 shots.

  • All-women's triathlon to open registration lottery

    SOUTH PORTLAND — The Tri for a Cure, Maine’s only all-women’s triathlon, will begin its annual registration lottery on January 31.

    “We’re thrilled to invite everyone back for our sixth year,” said Julie Marchese, Tri for a Cure race director and long-time cancer survivor. “We’ve worked hard to expand the event but there’s still a limit to how many athletes the course can fit. We think the lottery is the fairest way to give everyone a chance.”

    BRIDGTON — Winter is calling – take this opportunity to get outside with Loon Echo Land Trust for a day of family fun at Five Fields Farm in South Bridgton. Loon Echo Land Trust will hold the Second Annual Snowfest on February 16 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
