  • Earth Day concert slated at church

    NORWAY — The First Universalist Church of Norway will hold its fifth annual Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 21.

    Beginning at 5 p.m in the church's Fellowship Hall, there will be a church supper, which will feature health-conscious selections made from local ingredients. After the supper, all are welcome to attend the church’s annual Earth Day Peace Concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

    The concert will feature performances by Heather Pierson, Leah Wolfsong, The Norway UU Choir and more.

  • Stunt comedian McCoy at PAC

    FRYEBURG — World-travelling entertainer Brent McCoy is bringing his award-winning performance to the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m.

    Tickets are $4 for children and $8 for adults and are available for purchase online at www.fryeburgacademy.org/pac or by calling the Box Office at 935-9232. Group rates available upon request. The theater is located at 18 Bradley Street on the campus of Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg. Parking is free.

  • Best is Artist of the Month

    NORWAY — The Western Maine Art Group “Artist of the Month” for April is Don Best of Norway. Don lives with his family on Crockett Ridge Road in Norway and enjoys working on wood sculptures, using basswood grown in Maine or even wood from recycled materials.

    Don went to the Maine College of Art in Portland, studying painting, and sculpture. Over the years, Don has worked in many different media including weaving, jewelry making, print making, but for the last dozen years has mainly worked with wood.

  • Hypnotist at Eastman PAC

    FRYEBURG — Roderick Russell is bringing his award-winning and hilarious stage hypnosis show to the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center in support of the Sophomore Class of Fryeburg Academy on Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m. The show is appropriate for families. On-stage participation is strictly volunteer. Don’t worry; Roderick won’t force you on stage! He’ll only suggest it… Tickets are $10 per person and are available for purchase at the door the evening of the show. You may also call the Box Office at 935-9232 if you wish to reserve tickets.

  • Artists invited for the Moore Park Art Show

    PARIS — The Moore Park Art Show in South Paris is seeking exhibitors for a celebration and sale of original arts, Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date July 28).

    The fourth annual show will feature 60 artists and artisans with a new craft table tent with live entertainment and fine fare. Over $600 in ribbons will be awarded to several artists representing painting, photography and crafts in an optional judged competition.

    The event is presented by the Town of Paris, Parks and Recreation Department and the Mahoosuc Arts Council.

    It is always said that remakes of horror classics will never be the same as the originals.

    At least with some titles in the past 10 years, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street – they have plenty of entertainment value compared to the new Evil Dead.

    The original 1981 horror cult classic spawned a fan-favorite trilogy, a stage musical, video games and merchandise. But with this remake, fans will be less thrilled and more offended.

  • Celebration Barn offering Emerging Artist Scholarships

    PARIS — Celebration Barn Theater is Maine's residential center for creating and presenting original theater. Located on a farm in South Paris, Celebration Barn offers a full season of workshops and performances to fuel the development of new highly engaging theater.

    It has just announced new scholarships for The Celebration Devising Intensive Workshop running July 8-20.

  • Local poets celebrate poetry month, Hull

    NORWAY — The Mountain Poets Society will celebrate National Poetry Month with a reading in honor of Norway poet Ben Hull (1941-2012) on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the Norway Memorial Library.

    Free commemorative bookmarks that combine a photo of Ben and one of his favorite poems will be available to all who attend.

    Benjamin Franklin Hull III wrote wonderful poems about the people, cats, birds, and places that he loved. Born in Gloucester, MA, he was a computer programmer for 30 years in the Boston area.
