  • Maine home sales up in December

    SOUTH PORTLAND — The median sales price of a single-family existing home in Maine continues its upward track. According to the Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc. (MREIS), the statewide median sales price (MSP) rose 4.24% in December 2010, compared to December 2009. The MSP indicates that half of the homers were sold for more and half sold for less. The number of units of home sales in Maine declined 10.68% in that same time period.

  • Business tax prep workshop set

    Women, Work & Community will be offering a three-hour workshop “Easy Steps for Business Tax Prep” designed for individuals with business income to report, whether you plan to do your own taxes or work with a professional tax preparer. The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, February 10, from 5- 8 p.m. at Western Maine University & Community College Center in South Paris

  • Intro to self-employment workshop offered

    SOUTH PARIS — A free three-hour workshop for anyone interested in starting a business is being offered in South Paris on Thursday, February 3.

    This introductory workshop will walk you through the pros and cons of owning your own business, show you how to get started, point out the major elements of a business plan, introduce the many resources available in the Oxford County area and help you decide whether self employment is the right choice for you.

  • Farmers' union announces top management promotions

    OXFORD — Paris Farmers Union’s owner and CEO Peter Chapman announced on January 1 that Marc West has been promoted to the office of President of Paris Farmers Union. For the last several years West has been the manager of the corporation’s Farm Sales and Service Division, Wholesale Division Buyer, Credit Manager & Warehouse/Logistics Manager.

  • Family-owned business awards call for nominations

    PORTLAND — Maine-based family-owned businesses with the goal of improving their visibility may find that opportunity through awards now being announced. Nominations are being accepted for the 12th Maine Family Business Awards, which will be awarded May 16 at the Marriott Hotel in South Portland.

    The 2010 Awards drew nearly 400 to meet 18 finalists. Awards were made in these categories:

    NORWAY — Women undergoing routine mammograms at Stephens Memorial Hospital Women’s Imaging Center now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography.

    Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) unveiled the state-of-the-art system, Selenia™ digital mammography from Hologic™, in December. SMH is very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for breast cancer detection. Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is acquired and, more importantly, viewed.

  • Farm Service disaster program sign up began January10

    SOUTH PARIS — Oxford County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Marcia Hall announced that the 2009 crop year Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments (SURE) program sign-up began on January 10. SURE is a disaster program that provides assistance to farmers and ranchers who have experienced losses caused by natural disasters.
