  • Nominations deadline nearing for Family Business Awards

    PORTLAND — Maine's family-owned businesses are being reminded that the deadline for nominations for the 12th Maine Family Business Awards is approaching. Although completed applications are not due until April 1, nominations are requested by February 26, according to Tom Juenemann, executive director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business.

  • FSA programs available for livestock producers

    BANGOR — USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Maine State Executive Director Donovan E. Todd III reminds livestock producers throughout Maine that FSA programs may be available to assist them. Many are dealing with harsh winter weather, which is causing serious harm to livestock and forage due to heavy snow, ice and extremely cold temperatures.

  • Signup period opens for asparagus producers

    SOUTH PARIS — USDA Farm Service Agency Maine State Executive Director Donovan E. Todd III announced that domestic asparagus producers may sign up for compensation due to marketing losses resulting from imports during the 2004 through 2007 crop years. Producers may apply for compensation beginning on February 7 through April 8, 2011.

  • USDA announces referendum on sorghum program

    WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that a referendum on the Sorghum Promotion, Research and Information Order begins today and continues through February 28. For the program to continue, a simple majority of those voting must support the continuation of the program.

  • Pizza night to benefit scholarship fund

    NEWRY — On Thursday, February 10, the Rotary Club of Bethel will hold its inaugural All-You-Can-Eat Pizza night at the Matterhorn, Sunday River Road in Newry. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased in advance from any Club member or at the door. Proceeds benefit Rotary's Scholarship fund to be given in honor of Rocky Freda.

  • Norway doctor joins medical group

    NORWAY — Jett Family Practice, a primary care practice that has served Oxford Hills residents for nearly 10 years, has joined the Central Maine Medical Group regional healthcare provider network. The practice will relocate to 39 Main Street in Norway on February 1 and will reopen there as Norway Family Practice.

  • Nonprofit workshop offers training in marketing

    BELFAST — The University of Maine's Certificate in Nonprofit Organization Management is offering the next workshop in the series on Friday, March 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The topic for this session is "Marketing the Nonprofit Organization."

    The workshop will present strategies for public outreach and promotional planning for nonprofit organizations. Emphasis will be placed upon developing a media relations program and understanding the advertising, market research, and other communication tools to be used in calling attention to the work of the nonprofit organization.
