  • Learn to Sew program at Norway Memorial Library

    NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library will hold a Learn to Sew program for third — sixth graders on Thursday, February 3, 10 and 17, from 3:15-4:30 p.m.  Pre-registration is required.

  • Hebron Academy announces first trimester Honor Roll

    HEBRON — Hebron Academy Head of School John King recently recognized the students in the academy's Upper School who have attained honors for the first trimester.

  • Hawkins wins national oratorical contest

    SOUTH PARIS — Tabatha Hawkins of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School presented the top prepared oration based upon the US Constitution at the tri-sponsored local post level of the National High School Oratorical Contest on Friday, January 14, at Western Maine Veterans Home.

    Extemporaneous feature talks, which follow the prepared orations, are also based on the Constitution. All contestants speak on the same extemporaneous subject. Prepared orations are from eight to 10 minutes in length with extemporaneous featured talks running from three to five minutes.

  • Hodgdon named to Dean's List

    BOSTON, MA — Elise Hodgdon from Norway has been named to Fisher College's Dean's List for the Fall 2010 semester.

    To qualify for Dean's List, students must achieve a minimum grade-point average of 3.3, earn at least 12 graded credits, and have no failing grades throughout the semester.

  • Local residents named to the Dean's List

    STANDISH — The following local residents were named to the Dean's list at Saint Joseph's College of Maine for the fall semester:

    Gordon Smith and Katie Walsh of Casco, Lindsey Morse of Mechanic Falls, Jenna Chase and Molly Shaw of Naples, Samantha Menzel of Oxford, Kayla Collins of Poland, Brittany Fleming of South Paris, Ashley Condon and Cassandra Dillon of Sumner and Conner Tremblay and Mercedes Theriault of Waterford.

    To be eligible for Dean's list, a student must attain an average of 3.5 or better.

  • Margaret Chase Smith essay contest opens

    SKOWHEGAN — The Margaret Chase Smith Library is pleased to announce the theme of its 15th annual high school essay contest. Toward the end of Senator Smith’s career, Congress passed major legislation to clean up America’s air and water. Among other changes, it mandated the end of Maine log drives, like the ones that floated by her Skowhegan home overlooking the Kennebec River.

  • Public breakfast to benefit child care

    OXFORD — The Oxford School Age Child Care & Preschool Program (SACC) will be hosting a public breakfast on Saturday, January 22 from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Oxford Community Center.

    Enjoy a home cooked meal of eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, home fries, French toast, pancakes and homemade baked beans and help support the local children. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Raffles will also be available. For more information, please call 539-2406.

  • Ordway speaks about expedition

    HEBRON — Laura Ordway of Bridgton recently visited the Middle School at Hebron Academy to talk about an expedition she made up Denali (Mt. McKinley in Alaska) when she was younger. Ordway spoke about an hour and held the students’ enraptured attention the entire time. She showed slides of her ascent to Denali’s 20,320-foot summit, which took her about three weeks.

    Stevi Lynn Von Blarcom, and her son, eleven year-old Jonathan Von Blarcom are pictured here with Nutrition Asssociate Terry Berry from the U Maine Cooperative Extension. The Cooperative Extension Eat Well Program provides individualized instruction, and encouragement for people who want to make healthy dietary changes within a budget. They offer a 10 session class that consists of home visits to tailor the program to special dietary restrictions, and preferences. The Von Blarcoms are participating in the program this summer.
  • Make puppets at the Norway library

    NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library will be holding a puppet-making workshop on Tuesday, January 25, from 3:15-4:45 p.m.

    Participants will each make two different types of puppets; one sock puppet and one paper bag puppet. Following the puppet making the group will act out a short skit using its new props.

    Parents are invited to attend at 4:30 p.m. to watch the performance. For more information or to register children for this program please call the Norway Memorial Library at 743-5309 x4.
