St. John gets scholarship
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amHARRISON — Ronald St. John is among 17 students who recently received a Maine Better Transportation Association Educational Foundation scholarship. The Foundation awards scholarship monies to deserving Maine students in transportation-related fields. St. John attends Washington County Community College and is studying Heavy Equipment Operation.
Paris registration set
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amSOUTH PARIS — Registration and screening for next year’s kindergarten class at Paris Elementary School will be held on Tuesday, May 17. Children who will be five years old on or before October 15, 2011, are eligible to attend kindergarten. Parents are encouraged to contact the Paris Elementary School office immediately to set an appointment time for May 17. Appointments will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Be prepared to give your child’s name, birth date, home address and phone number.
Mother of the Year contest begins
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amOXFORD HILLS — The Advertiser Democrat is on a mission to find the Mother of the Year amongst its Oxford Hills moms.
Children in fourth grade may enter the Mother of the Year contest by writing a short essay telling us: Why My Mother Should be Mother of the Year.
Essays should be thoughtful and honest. They need to be in the child's words with no adult input. Essays will be published in the paper.
Western Mtn. college offers Teaching in Costa Rica
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amBETHEL — Bethel native Sarah Rackliffe spent last year as a World Teach volunteer, arriving in a tiny rural village in Costa Rica with little knowledge of Spanish. She lived with a Costa Rican family nearby and taught English to primary level students in the one-room schoolhouse. Sarah will describe these life-changing experiences and adventures and share her slides in the next Down Home Maine series sponsored by the Western Mountains Senior College. Join in on Thursday, March 24, from 4:30-6 p.m. at Gould Academy’s McLaughlin Auditorium.

Huskies are howling all fourth grade Waterford Wildcats to come out and play – they want to make friends with you. Please come and “strut your cat stuff” on May 13.
This Harrison Elementary School Variety Show will involve Harrison Kindergarten-sixth graders, fourth graders from Waterford Elementary School and teachers and staff. They are looking for lots of variety and fun for this “Variety” Show.
After School Program set at library
Mar 10, 2011 12:01 amPARIS — The Paris Public Children's Library hosts an After School Program on Mondays at 4 p.m. when school is in session. Stories with follow-up activities are provided. All ages are welcome. As March is Nutrition Month, healthy snacks will be provided. They will be celebrating National Nutrition and Health Month, St. Patrick's, and the Coming of Spring. The schedule is as follows:
March 14: "Pigs Make Me Sneeze" by Mo Willems; activity is "Catch Your Sneeze" art project.

Retired Teachers scholarships available
Mar 10, 2011 12:01 amOXFORD COUNTY — The Oxford County Education Association Retired Teachers is announcing that the scholarships it offers for 2011 will include four $500 grants.
Preference will be given to people pursuing some career in education, and will be granted not only to area high school graduates, but also to non-traditional students who are re-entering programs of study. Candidates must be legal residents of Oxford County.
All applications must be obtained from and submitted through local high school guidance departments.
