    Tufts University

    MEDFORD, MA — Tufts University recently announced the Dean's List for the Fall 2010 semester. Among the students honored is Timothy Martin of Casco, Class of 2013.

    Dean's List honors at Tufts University require a semester grade point average of 3.4 or greater.

  • Financial future

    FINANCIAL SMARTS — Doug Smith, Hannaford associate relations manager and Tim Roberts,  OHCHS senior, discuss the pros and cons of different food plans during the recent “C Ur Financial Future” presented by the staff of Oxford Federal Credit Union and community volunteers. The students initially learned about credit scores and why they matter. They were then assigned a monthly salary depending on their chosen future career, visited eight booths making choices about things like buying a car and renting an apartment while staying within their monthly budgets.

  • Oxford Kindergarten registration set

    OXFORD — Registration and screening for next year's kindergarten at Oxford Elementary School is scheduled for Thursday, May 12. Children who will be five years old on or before October 15 are eligible to attend kindergarten. Appointments are scheduled in the order they are requested so parents are encouraged to call the Oxford Elementary School office soon to set up a 15-minute appointment.

  • CMCC to host open house Saturday, April 9

    AUBURN — Central Maine Community College (CMCC) will host its annual spring open house for interested students Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its lakeside campus at 1250 Turner Street in Auburn. Faculty members and student services staff will be on hand to provide information on programs of study, financial aid, the admissions process, and options for transferring to four-year colleges.

  • Enter your Mom in mother of the Year!

    OXFORD HILLS — The Advertiser Democrat is holding a Mother of the Year contest.

    Children in fourth grade may enter by writing a short essay telling us: Why My Mother Should be Mother of the Year.

    Essays should be thoughtful and honest. They need to be in the child's words with no adult input. Essays will be published in the paper.

    The essays will be judged independently by a panel of three: Ann Siekman, director, Norway Memorial Library; The Reverend Anne Stanley and Toni Hamlin, retired fourth grade teacher.

  • Paris Elementary School

    We have been closely following the progress of two adult eagles out in Iowa as they lay on three eggs.

    We’ve had this live camera streaming into our library every day for children to watch. Here are some of the facts we have learned about eagles:

    • An eagle egg will freeze (die) in one minute if Mom or Dad don’t keep it warm.

    • You can tell Mom and Dad apart because of their size. The female is much larger.

  • Thomas College representative to visit OHCHS

    SOUTH PARIS — A representative from Thomas College in Waterville will visit Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris on Wednesday, April 6 at 10 a.m. The representative will meet with students to discuss Thomas' academic and sports programs, and its residential life opportunities.

    Thomas is a private, career-oriented college that prepares its undergraduates for careers in business, technology and education and guarantees employment within 90 days of graduation. For more information about Thomas, please visit www.thomas.edu.

  • Kindergarten registration set

    SUMNER — Hartford-Sumner Elementary School, serving the towns of Hartford, Sumner, and Buckfield, announces Kindergarten registration and screening for the 2011 Kindergarten Class will take place on April 14 and 15, from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. All children who register must be five years old on or before October 15.
