  • Regency of Maine overcharging on lot rents

    To the Editor:

To Regency Corporation, 40 N. 4th St., Carbondale, CO 81623

Let it be known that I/we as low or fixed income tenants believe our landlord, Regency of Maine, Inc., is over charging for lot rents in our present low-income economy.

Regency’s lot rents are way out of line to all of the area’s local trailer parks. Instead of wanting to charge more for lot rent, Regency should be making reductions in lot rent and dropping pet fees. (What are pet fees, anyway?)

  • Thank you for DARE program

    To the Editor:

  • Letter to Paris selectmen

    To the Editor:

An Open Letter to the Paris Board of Selectmen:

Discussion of homelessness and poverty have taken place at the Paris Selectmen’s meetings with some even suggesting that town funds, raised for other purposes, be diverted into some sort of social engineering program above and beyond what the town already does.

  • A modest proposal: no politician left behind

    To the Editor:

One day last Fall, I hiked a stretch of the AT and ascended Mount Katahdin with my well-worn copy of "The Maine Woods" by Thoreau and had an epiphany, of sorts…

    Tax Holiday

What if we sold, tax-free for private property owners, the "Dromedary Hump" – Maine lands north of a line from the Northeast corner of New Hampshire to Campobello Island in New Brunswick?

  • Signs of the times

    To the Editor:

I was thinking about this when I came across an article by Lisa Hix entitled "2010 Year in Review Natural Disasters." She can be accessed on Twitter. I would like to focus on one - floods.

The greatest flood (2010) was in Pakistan where one fifth of the land area was destroyed. News reported numerous floods in other nations and even in regions of our USA.

  • A lack of Christmas spirit? Or a lack of understanding?

    To the Editor:

On this past Saturday, December 28, my friend and I took our children on the 5:15 p.m. ride of the Polar Express in Portland. We came out of the parking garage in wonderful spirits. My friend's daughter in her arms, her son holding her hand, and my daughter skipping as her hand was in mine, headed to the train stop.

  • One man's opinion

    To the Editor:

    Friends and Neighbors,

I served two difficult tours in South Vietnam in '68 and '69, and I have long held strong opinions regarding our nation's conduct on a global scale in terms of military intervention. As indicated by this letter, I honestly feel that we are on a dead-end street in this deeply rooted conflict taking place in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the like. Thanks for taking the time to read my commentary. Hopefully some of my thoughts can provide further insight toward bringing this dilemma to a sound resolution.

  • 'Thank you' from Christmas in Harrison

    To the Editor:

The Christmas in Harrison Committee would like to thank everyone who generously gave to make the 25th annual celebration possible. To all of those who make the Silver Bells ring, the lights glow and the village sparkle, we extend our deep gratitude. We are grateful for the Christmas Spirit of all those who participate. We would like to recognize everyone who made the magic happen and apologize if we have missed anyone.

  • Poland Historical Society says thank you

    To the Editor:

The Poland Historical Society wishes to thank those who attended, donated, volunteered and provided support for the Holiday Market and Bakery Sale held on December 11. The Holiday Market was a big success and the Poland Historical Society was able to raise funds for a Memorabilia Barn, which is to be built behind the District #22 School House along Route 26.

  • A thank you to TLEA
