Save future of racing
Mar 10, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
My parents, Linton and Tina Quirrion, have raced and raised Standard Bred race horses in Maine for forty-eight years. My siblings and I worked with my parents on their farm in Livermore, were we attended Livermore Falls High School and then went on to achieve multiple advanced degrees from Maine colleges. Racing, studying and working on the farm were a way of life for us and I would urge you to support Biddeford Downs so that other families have the opportunity that I had to grow up on a working farm.

Once again, Harrison’s Ski and Snowboard Program enjoyed another wonderful season, thanks to our many hard working volunteers and we would like to extend our gratitude by saying thank you as well as closing up the season with this last bit of program news.
LIHEAP fuel assistance has problems
Mar 10, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
I hear talk of LIHEAP fuel assistance being cut. Repairs should be considered before any cutting is done. The program has two serious problems:
1. People can apply on the basis of their income for the previous three months. This allows the proprietors of ski resorts, summer camps and campgrounds as well as charter boat operators and others to wait three months and then apply as if they were indigent. Requiring income verification for the previous 12 months would close this loophole.
Casino bait and switch
Mar 03, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
Thank you for the visual proof on the front page of last Thursday’s Advertiser [February 17]. Just before the vote in November, the Lewiston Sun Journal ran an editorial touting the 1,700 jobs the casino (casino, not the whole resort) would bring. After the vote, it was 700.
Whose rights?
Mar 03, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
The question currently facing the Paris Selectboard, ATV use of Parsons Road to connect two sections of ATV trails, is a matter of citizen's rights.
The question is, whose rights? Who decides that? And, is that answer absolute?
At stake is recreational use of land for citizens. This needs to be defined, and then protected. At stake, as well, are home- and land-owner rights. These rights need to be recognized, and also protected.
A letter to drug addiction
Mar 03, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
I am a thirty five year old divorced father of three who now resides in South Paris, Maine.
I grew up in Poland and had a loving family; I started smoking pot at nine years old.
My school work suffered because of this and I became distant toward family and the few friends that I did have. I continued to smoke pot through my teenage years, and when I turned 17 I got married.
I was expecting a kid, a little girl who was born just a few days after I turned 18...she was beautiful.
Teachers' pay
Mar 03, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
Teachers in Maine and across the country are up in arms as states grapple with tough decisions to close yawning budget gaps. As employees of the state, teachers' compensation is fair game when it comes to balancing the budget.
Casino costing jobs, killing horse racing
Mar 03, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
We are writing on behalf of our family and many others who are involved in harness racing, including those who make their living through harness racing indirectly in the state of Maine. It is our hope to give you a better appreciation for our industry, our livelihood. We would like you to understand that our future is at stake undoubtedly, and the impact if it were to be taken away.
Funding for home visiting
Mar 03, 2011 12:01 amTo the Editor:
Did you know that the proposed biennial State budget eliminates funding for home visiting (Maine Families/Parents as Teachers)? The elimination of funding is on page 271 of the budget; but it is hidden in a generalized cut to the Bureau of Health’s Fund for Health Maine budget. The Fund for Healthy Maine (“tobacco funds”) is the only source of revenue for the home visitation program so this cut – not a reduction – eliminates the program.
