  • McKusick family reunion

    To the Editor:

The state of Maine McKusick family reunion will be held on Saturday, July 23, at 11:30 a.m. It will be held under a big tent, rain or shine, at the McKusick family farm (Lone Elm Farm) in Parkman. The McKusick farm is located at 441 State Highway 150, about three miles south of Guilford.

Bring your picnic lunch and a folding chair. A grill will be available if you wish to cook. Lawn games will be available for the young and the young at heart.

  • Thank you, Norway residents

    To the Editor:

Thank you Norway residents for your votes on Monday, June 20.

On that evening Norway held its annual town meeting at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. There were a total of 44 Articles that had to be read and voted upon and all were passed. The Articles of greatest interest to me, however, as a Board of Trustees member of Norway Memorial Library, were Article 30 and Article 32 as both dealt with library funding issues.

  • Taxpayer responds

    To the Editor:

I read your article “from the Editor’s desk” and would like to respond and clear up some inaccurate statements and innuendos.

I have been a taxpayer in the Town of Norway for 10 years and have seen my taxes increase 400 percent during that time frame. I am not against paying taxes. This is not the first town meeting I have attended, nor the first time I have spoken at the meetings.

  • Journey for Joelle finally ends

    To the Editor:

Since February 2010, we have been fundraising to bring home our daughter Joelle. Many in the community contributed to this life-changing event through various arenas such as yard sale donations, business displays of “Journey for Joelle” bracelets, the DECA craft fair, the Northwood Angels Christmas Sale, and the Community “Journeys” for Joelle and the Kids of Maine Walk-a-thon.

  • The endorsing of town managers

    To the Editor:

An article in the June 23 Advertiser Democrat announced that "Norway endorses Tarr for solid waste board." One has to wonder why town officials from Norway would decide they – rather than the Paris town selectboard who must be the endorsing body – should be making such a public announcement.

  • Thank you, Gov. LePage

    To the Editor:

Thank you, Governor LePage. Over the past six months, you’ve made it a priority to improve Maine’s business climate and, as a result, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently ranked Maine number one in the nation when it comes to business-friendly infrastructure. And as part of the new state budget, you were successful in implementing much needed welfare reform including a five-year lifetime limit on most welfare benefits.

  • Fix up Oxford speedway

    To the Editor:

One of the jewels of the Oxford Hills is Oxford Plains Speedway. Racing at OPS over the last 40 years has been exciting and very entertaining. It's very disheartening to see how much the track has gone down hill.

It's not the fault of the hard working employees, or lack of talent of the drivers who perform each week. It's because of the current owner, who has let the track run down to look like a third rate carnival.

  • Thank you, David Lock

    To the Editor:

The Poland Spring Resort would like to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to David Lock, a member of our Poland Spring Resort family. David will be lending his venerable talents to us, once again, as the director of this summer's musical comedy "The Fantasticks," which will run every Tuesday evening at our Maine Inn.

  • Thank you Books N Things

    To the Editor:

A couple of weeks ago, Books N Things held a book signing for “Togus the Cat” by Don Carrigan. It was a wonderful experience and a great time. A photographer was on hand and Erica, owner of Books ‘n Things, was sure to print and give me a copy of myself. How thoughtful. Just a reminder that on Saturday, July 9, Tim Sample will have a book signing for his book “Maine Curiosities.” Let’s pay him a visit.

  • Thank you, Old Home Days

    To the Editor:

Betty and I want to praise the West Paris Old Home Days Committees for a very well organized and planned weekend. What a great job you all did and we know just how much work this event requires in time and energy.

I also want to praise all who attended my Citizen of the Year Award held at the Grange Hall last Thursday evening and a big thank you to all for all the kindness, and we love you all.

    Ted Jones
