Letters

  • Pray there be no more names

    To the Editor:

Recently a group of Taliban insurgents destroyed a Chinook killing 38 members of our armed forces including Afghan soldiers. Shortly thereafter F-16s killed most of the group that destroyed the helicopter.

Although the Chinook was downed by a rpg rather than a Stinger it would appear that the tactics we taught the Mujahideen may come back to haunt us.

War, with its mooncalf Death, certainly reveals the fourth horseman of the "apokalupsis" whose name is Death.

  • Bumpy roads

    To the Editor:

I am sick to death of bumpy crappy roads.

  • Dobbins reunion held

    To the Editor:

Joe Dobbins' beautiful home on the Gore Road in Otisfield was the site of a lively Dobbins-Deasy reunion the weekend of July 9 and 10. Descendants of James Dobbins and James Deasy, first generation Houlton farmers of Irish stock, gathered from around the country and Canada to celebrate their heritage and reconnect with one another. Over 130 people came from as far away as California, a number topping the turnout for the last big reunion of this clan, held in 1996.

  • Hidden gem

    To The Editor:

There is a well hidden gem in Oxford Hills named Dr. Jill Gabrielson. Dr. Jill is caring, kind, knowledgeable and more. Dr. Jill is also available and works in a private setting, not a money-making, minute-counting machine.

We are very lucky to have such a giving professional in our area. We rest easier knowing that our son Andrew is in such good hands. If you need time to sit and speak with a provider and not get the run around, Dr. Gabrielson is located right in Norway. Check out the website, healthyforlifewellness.com.

  • "Appreciation banquet" held

    To the Editor:

The Oxford Hills Optimist Club recently held a "Youth Appreciation Banquet" on June 11 at the Norway Town building. Ten students from Oxford Hills Middle School, who had been nominated by their teachers, were honored for their efforts in school, with their peers and teachers, in sports and/or other extracurricular activities. Guests at the banquet were served dinner and students received framed Certificates of Achievement from the Optimist Club, as well as gifts from local businesses.

  • Thank you, Norway Vet

    To the Editor:

This is a letter to express a deep and sincere thank you to Dr. Robichaud and the entire staff at Norway Veterinary Hospital. Our cat "Tippy Tinky," a member of our family for many years, became extremely ill over the last week. My wife contacted a couple of veterinarians to see what could be done, but the response was "We can't do anything without money up front." Needless to say, my wife was becoming distressed and going into crisis at this time.

  • Pick up your own trash

    To the Editor:

I am writing to you because people have forgotten how to be respectful to our beaches and parks. My son has swimming lessons at Norway Lake. On Monday we got here early and found beer bottles, a baby's diaper, bar of soap and someone's clothes.

  • Concerns for friends in Norway

    To the Editor:

I have friends who reside in the seniors’ section of Town and Country Mobile Home Village in Norway. When they purchased a home and moved into the park, they were given permission from the park manager to pursue their hobby of detailing cars. Three years later, a senior citizen neighbor complained and the manager told my friend to keep right on detailing and if the neighbor was unhappy, maybe he should move.

  • Thanks for help with Harrison 5K

    To the Editor:

The 9th Annual Harrison Recreation Department's 5K Run by the Lake, held on July 6, was a great success. Despite the inclement weather, this year's registrations nearly doubled from last year, with 124 runners crossing the finish line for a whoopie pie.

  • Colby reunion held

    To the Editor:

Fifty-one descendants of Scott and Annie Colby met for their annual reunion on Saturday, July 23, at the First Baptist Church and Common on Paris Hill. Attendance was double what it was last year. It was a great time to be able to meet relatives we see only once a year and in some cases longer. We got to know each other better.
