Thank you, Poland Spring
Oct 13, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
We want to thank the people of Poland Spring Bottling Co. for donating water to the Thompson Lake Environmental Association (TLEA) for use at our annual meeting, yearly BBQ, and for the YCC (Youth Conservation Corp). The YCC performs physical labor to create buffers, box culverts and drainage, all to prevent non-point source pollution. They spend the summer weeks in every town bordering Thompson Lake (Poland, Casco, Oxford and Otisfield).
Calling all firefighters
Oct 13, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
There is an association in Western Maine that meets monthly at different fire departments throughout the area for a dinner and meeting. It’s a great way to network, meet others with the same concerns and just maybe come away with some new ideas.
During this past year the Western Maine Firefighters Association has helped a firefighter to attend a seminar in Washington, D.C. and provide an opportunity to meet with Federal Congressional delegates Olympia Snowe and Mike Michaud, working on fire and emergency legislative issues.
Concern for our young
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I thank your newspaper for the front page article of September 22, informing the citizens of our OHCHS principal Ted Moccia’s concern for the flat SAT test scores at the high school.
Committee should have been consulted
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Perhaps the staff of the Advertiser Democrat can find the results of the “secret” town meeting in Hebron, on Wednesday, September 21. Rumor has it that around $50,000 was appropriated (in two articles) by 13 voters.
As a member of the budget committee it seems we should have been consulted.
Thank you,
Harold “Bunky” Hall

Stolen Bear
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
To whomever took my bear from the Exhibition Hall at the Oxford Fair, I hope that they had a “good deed” in mind, like maybe giving it to a sick child or an elderly person in a nursing home.
If you didn’t have that in mind, I think that you are, for lack of a better word, scum.

Keep Election Day registration
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
On November 8, Mainers will have the opportunity, and the privilege, to cast their vote in the 2011 elections. This year, a very important question is on the ballot which will require a 'yes' or 'no' answer. I urge anyone reading this to please vote Yes.

Concern with ambulance
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
While in a local store the other morning I overheard a conversation which concerned me greatly and inspired me to do some investigating, since I live near the town where this occurred.
On Thursday night, 9/29, there was a serious motor vehicle accident on Route 26 in Greenwood. Apparently it was a head on collision, and there were serious injuries to several victims involved in this accident.
The upsetting part, which is what got my attention, was the amount of time these people had to wait for medical help.
ARTirondack artists sought
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
It is the time of year again when the Mahoosuc Arts Council seeks new and previous artists to volunteer to paint a winter-themed ARTirondack chair to raise money for arts programming in Bethel. The beautiful, one-of-a-kind chairs will be featured and exhibited throughout the community before the fundraising auction event which will take place during February vacation week next year.
Preserve meant to be wild
Oct 06, 2011 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Cornwall Nature Preserve, a gorgeous section of land of 100 acres plus I’m sure (was later told it was 147 acres) is land on the right side of the Paris Hill Road in South Paris.
It was given to our town by the generosity of Mrs. Alice Cornwall of Paris Hill. There are beautiful hiking trails, scenic stonewalls from years past and even a babbling brook to remind you of youth. The trails are nice and we think you’ll be glad to walk a scenic area without vehicle traffic or noises.
