Letters

  • To the Board, or not to the Board, that is the question

    To the Editor:

Cathy Richardson and Barbara Payne did an outstanding job in creating the “Get to Know You Selectman’s seminar” this past spring. This one event was a breath of fresh air for the citizens of Paris.

Currently, we are five months with the new board. We expected, as citizens, for all the board members to speak up on all issues presented before them. It is currently being administrated, influenced and impacted by the chair and vice-chair. This is not the way to go forward.

  • Slumlord, shoddy oversight

    To the Editor:

I am a former Section 8 tenant of Madaline Pratt's. I also used to help a relative of mine who worked for her repair her apartments. I lived on 17 Deering Street. This apartment was in horrible condition yet was passed by Kay of Avesta Housing.

  • Aspire Higher poem enjoyed

    To the Editor:

Recently I went to a lovely memorial service for Gay (Gabrielle) Reid from England and Otisfield, at the Otisfield Baptist Church. Her son Oliver read a wonderful poem in her memory. I also lost my mother this fall, and its message struck home for me. It made me think of the Aspire focus in the schools as well. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

    Kim Emmons,

    Norway

  • Conditions affect everyone

    To the Editor:

I congratulate you, Ms. Sheehan, and your assistant editor Matt Hongoltz-Hetling, on your recent in-depth look at the "world of lower income rental housing," and the shameful practice of a certain few landlords who have been renting non-compliant housing in Norway and Paris for many years.

  • Corrections to 'Economic downturn'

    To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to make corrections to the article "Economic downturn affects Main Street," which appeared in the October 27 Advertiser Democrat.

It is not necessarily easy, when looking at today's economy, to walk the fine line between discouragement and a realistic assessment of where we are and how we might build the necessary resilience to move confidently into the future. It may be even more difficult to record someone else's exact position on that fine line.

  • Waterford 5K thanks

    To the Editor:

  • Wrong number

    To the Editor:

I had a message on my message machine the other day and lo and behold it was our state legislator asking me to vote no on #1 on voting day. What the hell is this world coming to? So what’s up with that?

People all over the world are overthrowing their dictatorship government, looking for democracy. And here our legislators voted to overthrow what’s been in place since 1973, which is the capability of its citizens to register to vote on voting day. Letting people register to vote improves the amount of people who go out and vote.

  • Why is LePage going for local control?

    To the Editor:

Local governments are Maine’s most efficient, budget conscious and fiscally responsible spenders of taxpayers’ money. That is because they are closest to the people they serve and the taxpayers who pony up the spending money. The governance structure of local towns is responsive, open and designed to involve everyone. Town meetings are time-honored traditions in Maine because they just make sense.

  • Volunteers thanked

    To the Editor:

On Saturday, October 22, the Bethel Regional Airport held its third annual Fall Foliage Scenic Rides community event. High winds forced postponement of the event from October 15, and although not the brightest and driest day, the winds were light, making the flights very enjoyable.

  • Great investigative reporting

    To the Editor:

Wow, great investigative reporting! I’m so glad to see you take on the slumlords. They’ve given all landlords a bad name for years.

It sounds to me like the Section 8 rules need changing so that tenants aren’t coerced into staying in unsafe and unsanitary places, afraid to complain and unable to move out. It sounds like they’re held hostage by the threat of losing Section 8 status. What a bonus for the slumlord!
