Letters

  • Happy New Year

    To the Editor:

There is a rule of thumb, I think, that every celebration also has a certain amount of grief. Speaking as a woman who has borne children, every birthday is a celebration. The children meet the criteria and hopefully I haven’t screwed them up too bad. It’s a little sad and almost like a little death that the baby is gone forever but with sweet memories and photos.

  • An industry at risk

    To the Editor:

Maine legislators are making decisions about severe cuts in MaineCare’s contribution to the health care industry in Maine. Deadline for these decisions is supposed to be by the end of January. It is unfortunate that there has not been time or opportunity to have more of a public conversation or a deeper look into the wider implication of the effect of these cuts.

  • Access to health care

    To the Editor:

Today, more than ever before, we need access to health care throughout our lives. Some of us were lucky to get it through work, some of us can afford to pay for it, and some of us are old enough to have Medicare and Part D prescription drug coverage. What about those who are not so fortunate?

  • Thank you

    To the Editor:

Santa visits Oxford would like to thank the Advertiser for all the help they did in posting about all of our events.

A thank you goes out to all those who helped us in anyway, you know who you are.

  • Awareness Walk planned

    To the Editor:

The car accidents resulting in losses of young lives in the recent past have been difficult to fathom.

I didn’t know the families personally but I have a teenager and young adult children of my own; I realize how vulnerable each of us is to such an overwhelming loss.

Two young women are pulling together an Awareness Walk to take place in the spring as a way to do something constructive for the community in the wake of its losses.

  • Thank God for Marilynn

    To the Editor:

Godly prayer to thank God for Marilynn. That she looked at this fat, ugly, old man at all is more than I deserve. Dear God, thank you. Such a lovely petite figure and kisses sweeter than wine — rewards I can only feel and observe. Thank you, God. Dear God I am so lucky at sweet old 70 to find a treasure and thank you, God, I swear I will say a prayer of thanks everyday for having a hummingbird emerge from all the grackles and crows, thank you, God.

Doctor Roy quietly said, “I think I hear a murmur.”

  • Information on Maine needed

    To the Editor:

Each member of our class is working on a Project called the "Parade of States." We are responsible for gathering as much information as we can from a number of sources.

I have chosen Maine for my state. If any of your readers would help me out by sending any pictures, postcards, a used license plate, facts, products, etc. from your state, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please send the information to: Cascade Christian  Schools, 601 Ninth Ave. S.E., Puyallup, WA 98371.

  • Anti-bullying act needed

    To The Editor:

With the Legislature back in session I have a citizen request that LD 1237, the Anti-Bullying Act, be reintroduced and passed into Law.

Children are no longer thought of as “small adults” that should be “seen and not heard.” Children are like empty vessels that need to be filled with knowledge, understanding, love and compassion. They have inherited strengths and weaknesses of which they are not yet aware.

  • Now debt-free

    To the Editor:

By the end of '05, as many still remember, my sister and I lost our beloved parents (Bill and Lorraine), the owners of Summit Golf Course. Though, like many others before us, we faced the vast confusion that estate issues can bring, we decided early on that our main focus had to be our golf course and to insure both its continued operation for ourselves and our players, to protect both its history and involvement in this game we so love.

  • AARP chapters congratulated

    To the Editor:

I am writing this letter in honor of our six AARP chapters in Maine who participated in the AARP chapter challenge to collect food and monetary donations for local food pantries. The chapters collected a colossal amount. In fact, among them, they collected over four tons of food. In addition to the food, the chapters donated almost $2,500 to the pantries which will go a long way toward feeding low-income Mainers who might otherwise go hungry in the coming months.
