Benefit dinner a success
Mar 21, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
We would like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone in the community who came out to support our friend and colleague Pamela Graffius at the recent benefit dinner, auction and dance at the Harrison VFW. We had a great turnout despite the snowy weather.
Keep Paris Police
Mar 21, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The sheriff wants to take the Paris Police and close the Paris Police Station. Well, I think it's wrong. They have been here in South Paris for years. It's not the citizens' fault the town office is in trouble.
The selectmen should understand that the citizens of South Paris should vote to keep the Paris Police and let then stay where they are.
They are all very good policemen and they are there when something goes wrong. Vote No. I want them to stay in South Paris. We need them here.
Pope takes Saint's name
Mar 21, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I was delighted to learn that the newly elected pope chose for himself the name of St. Francis of Assisi, generally known as patron saint of the animals. Indeed, Catholic and Anglican churches hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of October 4.
On one of his nature walks, Francis reportedly preached to the birds and is often portrayed with a bird in his hand.
Common Core alert
Mar 21, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Forty-five states have adopted national Common Core standards which will replace state educational standards in grades K-12. Common Core was part of the 2009 stimulus package which gave money to the states.
Many states accepted the Common Core without knowing what it was about - like “Pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." It was promoted as being globally competitive.
Setting the record straight
Mar 21, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I am a citizen of Poland who cares about her community. I have kept silent for years of the slanderous comments and the libel comments made about me. I chose to remain silent and not file legal proceedings, in hopes that the community will see the truth. I hope I can set the record straight.
Where are they?
Mar 14, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Where are they? You know, those guys that stood on the corner across from the Norway Library every Saturday morning last year holding signs? Where did they go? Did they do what they wanted to do...did they win…what was their battle, anyway?
Did they get discouraged ... couldn’t they come up with a single focus...a coherent statement? I seem to remember something about government and unfair and 1% and corporate taxes and the middle class and the working poor and climate change and greed and 99 percent.
Opera House mea culpa
Mar 14, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Mea Culpa.
At the ribbon cutting for the reopening of the Norway Opera House retail space I was totally remiss in not thanking all the area folks who contributed to this project. It was in my notes but my notes and I were in different places.
Do we pet horses or eat them?
Mar 14, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Last week, food safety officials in United Kingdom, France and Sweden found traces of horse meat in ground beef sold across Europe. Massive recalls and lawsuits are ensuing.
Can it happen here? Horse slaughter for human consumption was banned in the U.S. between 2007 and 2011. But now, a New Mexico slaughterhouse is getting approved by U.S. authorities to slaughter horses for human consumption, and a Philadelphia restaurant has already announced plans to serve horse meat.
