Keep drug discounts for elderly
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Governor’s budget calls for major cuts to the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and completely eliminates the Low Cost Drugs for the Elderly program (DEL).
By proposing these drastic measures, Maine is turning to the state’s oldest and poorest citizens and demanding they come up with a way to fix Maine’s budget woes by cutting back or eliminating their health care, their life-saving medications, and for many, their ability to stay in their own homes.
Thanks to Waterford Fire Department
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Waterford Fire Department. Recently, my brother had a chimney fire. He worked hard and thought he had successfully put it out.
After looking up the chimney and examining all the surrounding areas, he could see no evidence of any further sparks. Wisely, he didn't go to bed but sat up in his recliner where he dozed off.
Norway Easter Festival thanks you
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo The Editor:
Approximately 900 people participated in the ninth annual Norway Easter Festival! Attendees were greeted by the Easter Bunnies as they came through the door of the Norway Memorial Library to pick up their Bunny Trail Map, nibble on healthy snacks, visit the craft table and sign up for prizes.
The smiling participants skipped their way along Main Street visiting the businesses and organizations to find the hidden eggs, engage in activities and games and sign up for more prizes!
Bait and switch game
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Business of the Year, which hasn't been in business for a year, is at it again — surreptitiously changing owners and now publicly. So much for local ownership.
So, now that it's no longer "locally owned" will the new owners be bound by the promise made to the Town of Oxford, Oxford County and the state?
All those promises helped tip the vote in favor of the Casino.
All those promises represent money lost by customers in the Casino.
Was this the plan all along? Bait and switch.
Child Abuse Prevention Month
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a very important time to look at the impact home visiting can have on the next generation. We strive hoping our children have the best in education, good food, housing and highly attentive care.
It’s sad but many of our children don’t receive these things. We need to continue to have programs that assist and equip needing parents with the skills to properly care for a child and instill confidence to parent effectively.
Community loses DancingTrees
Apr 04, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
DancingTrees wishes to take this opportunity to thank all of its generous supporters and sponsors. Without your help, DancingTrees would not have been able to provide programs and services to the community.
Unfortunately, due to governmental sequestration, DancingTrees is losing its primary corporate sponsor. As a result and with great sadness, DancingTrees will close on Wednesday, May 1.
The Grackle
Apr 04, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to share a special story with you. On Monday, March 25, early morning, it was a bit chilly.
I was getting ready to start our downstairs wood stove but something made me check the chimney.
I opened the little door and lo and behold a beautiful common grackle with yellow eyes looked at me and flew out.
I opened the basement door and this beautiful 11-inch grackle wasn't hurt and flew right out the door!
I believe someone was watching over him.

How bad are the cuts?
Mar 28, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
So how bad are the cuts? Well folks we have heard a lot of dire forecast about what is going to happen because of sequester, teachers laid off, food shortages of biblical proportions, cops and firemen laid off, and our nation at risk because the border patrol will no longer be protecting our border (when did they start?).
Air quality
Mar 28, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Spring is here and with people soon to be spending more time outdoors, it is important to remember that with higher temperatures often comes increased levels of air pollution. Pollution in the air is hazardous to all who come in contact and even more so for those with lung disease, including children with asthma.
