Why the hub bub?
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
So what's the big hub bub about? The Casino was sold, and this comes as a surprise. Recalling that after a number of unsuccessful attempts to pass the gambling referendum, Question 1 finally passed in November 2010, after a group of area seasoned businessmen and women combined their business experience, developed a business plan that focused on utilizing local businesses got build and staff the Casino. (Hum, there appears to be a recurring central theme.)
Reducing COLAs
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Are you a retired woman who has worked most of your life while raising children and keeping up with housework? Do you count on the Social Security that you paid into as you worked for your retirement income? Have you appreciated the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) that have been made to keep up with the ever-increasing costs of living?
Meat and Heart Disease
Apr 18, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The new link between meat consumption and heart disease, discovered by Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic, is just the latest evidence linking meat consumption to killer diseases that cripple, then kill, 1.3 million Americans annually. Hazen’s study showed that carnitine, an amino acid contained in all meat products, is a major factor in heart failure.
Bethel Bee Week thanks
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The first-ever Bethel Bee Week was truly amazing. It brought together all ages and all parts of the community to join in becoming aware of the importance of honeybees through arts and community activities that built new relationships among people and local organizations.
A project of this scope takes a lot of support and commitment. It started as just a musical, “To Bee or Not to Bee,” by the Piti Theatre of Shelburne Falls, MA, that was going to be presented by the arts council.
Women in history
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I appreciated the article on Women's History Month (issue of March 28) and hope it will become an annual feature. Sometimes women's accomplishments (as men's), are lost sight of in the march of history – though it seems history often gallops these days!
Mary Baker Eddy, who was born and grew up in Bow, NH, and founded the Christian Science church in Boston, was a well-known religious leader in her time; and her best-known book still helps people find fresh inspiration and health through a deeper understanding of God and Christ Jesus.
Keep drug discounts for elderly
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Governor’s budget calls for major cuts to the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and completely eliminates the Low Cost Drugs for the Elderly program (DEL).
By proposing these drastic measures, Maine is turning to the state’s oldest and poorest citizens and demanding they come up with a way to fix Maine’s budget woes by cutting back or eliminating their health care, their life-saving medications, and for many, their ability to stay in their own homes.
Thanks to Waterford Fire Department
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Waterford Fire Department. Recently, my brother had a chimney fire. He worked hard and thought he had successfully put it out.
After looking up the chimney and examining all the surrounding areas, he could see no evidence of any further sparks. Wisely, he didn't go to bed but sat up in his recliner where he dozed off.
Norway Easter Festival thanks you
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo The Editor:
Approximately 900 people participated in the ninth annual Norway Easter Festival! Attendees were greeted by the Easter Bunnies as they came through the door of the Norway Memorial Library to pick up their Bunny Trail Map, nibble on healthy snacks, visit the craft table and sign up for prizes.
The smiling participants skipped their way along Main Street visiting the businesses and organizations to find the hidden eggs, engage in activities and games and sign up for more prizes!
Bait and switch game
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The Business of the Year, which hasn't been in business for a year, is at it again — surreptitiously changing owners and now publicly. So much for local ownership.
So, now that it's no longer "locally owned" will the new owners be bound by the promise made to the Town of Oxford, Oxford County and the state?
All those promises helped tip the vote in favor of the Casino.
All those promises represent money lost by customers in the Casino.
Was this the plan all along? Bait and switch.
Child Abuse Prevention Month
Apr 11, 2013 12:00 amTo the Editor:
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a very important time to look at the impact home visiting can have on the next generation. We strive hoping our children have the best in education, good food, housing and highly attentive care.
It’s sad but many of our children don’t receive these things. We need to continue to have programs that assist and equip needing parents with the skills to properly care for a child and instill confidence to parent effectively.
