Insulting and dishonest editorial
Dec 13, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The title of your recent editorial describes it well — "Insulting and Dishonest." In a desperate attempt to stir up controversy you have mischaracterized and criticized the South Paris Selectmen while apparently being unaware of the well written article on the front page of your own paper.
The headline "Board abandons police audit" is completely misleading, par of the course, while the article clearly states that ...."The Board voted unanimously to postpone the audit" of our police department.
The other side of humanity

As Christmas approaches, in the midst of so much human-caused chaos, it is nice to find something that shows the rest of the story.
A recent new program on NPBN called “On Being” tells of a Palestinian and an Israeli who suffered the death of a family member at the hands of “the enemy.” In an incredibly sensitive and moving interview, the program traces the paths taken by these people from shock and anger at their loss to respect for each other and for peace.
Support Christmas Seals®
Dec 13, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
As holiday cards begin arriving, many Northeast residents will notice envelopes decorated with the American Lung Association’s Christmas Seals® - a critical cornerstone in the fight for healthy lungs and healthy air for more than 100 years.
The Christmas Seals campaign was first introduced in 1907 as a way to stamp out tuberculosis. Today, the seal continues to be an important means of funding our mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
Medicare, Social Security shouldn't be cut
Dec 13, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
Neither Social Security nor Medicare should be used in last-minute budget deals that cut benefits for seniors to reduce the deficit. With the fiscal cliff discussions continuing in Washington, I hope Congress will work toward responsible solutions that strengthen both programs for current and future generations.
Impressed with Harrison FD
Dec 13, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I had the unfortunate experience on Saturday, November 24, of having a very serious fire at my home in Harrison. Although this was very traumatic, I must say how impressed I was with the professionalism, expertise and efficiency of the Harrison Fire Department and the other departments who worked with them.
It is obvious that they spend many hours training and learning to work together. Every person knew his role and performed it with precision and expertise.
The role of a newspaper
Dec 13, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
The role of a newspaper, especially a local paper, is basically two fold. It is the job of the News Room reporters to find and point out problems. It is the job of the Editorial staff to suggest solutions based upon fact, not political fancy, ideology or religious bigotry, to solve those problems.
Thank you, NFD

We would like to give a long overdue Thank You to Chief Dennis Yates and the entire Norway Fire Department for the help and assistance they provide to The Progress Center and the individuals we support.
Each year during National Fire Safety Month they visit the Center and work with program participants and staff on fire safety.
To say individuals supported in Progress Center programs look forward to the yearly visit would be a gross understatement. The lines are always long as they wait their turn to go through the Smoke House.
Becoming un-American
Dec 06, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
I recently read in the Lewiston Sun Journal a hideous letter from a local woman. I believe in free speech, and I believe in sharing good news, but when it comes to sending out hatred, bias, nastiness and falsehoods, I am dismayed.
I do not believe that even two people agree all the time, but I believe we can exist and be kind and look at issues in a sane way. I do not believe that letters containing venom serve any purpose other than to make a person who sends it look warped.
Food Pantry gives thanks
Dec 06, 2012 12:00 amTo the Editor:
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Oxford Hills Rotary Club for its generous food donation. Your boxes of food came at a time which helped many people for Thanksgiving and will help at Christmas too.
Also we wish to thank every person who has donated food or has given a gift card.
Thank you to all individuals who put cash in the collection container at the West Paris Town Office. We were able to purchase turkeys to feed four families.

The Waterford Fish and Game Club was founded in the mid-1940s by four men. Maureen M. Heath, a reporter for the Advertiser Democrat in Norway, wrote an excellent article on the beginnings of the Waterford Fish and Game Club several years ago.
