Letters

  • Violence in America

    To the Editor:

Living in Small Town America has usually felt like a safe place to be. The residents of Newtown, CT felt the same way until a mentally deranged killer acted on his anger and unemotional fantasies.

  • Student needs help on project

    To the Editor:

Each member of our class is working on a project called "The Parade of States." We are responsible for gathering as much information as we can from a number of sources.

I have chosen Maine for my state. If any of your readers wold help me out by sending any pictures, postcards, a used license plate, facts, products, etc. from your state, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please send the information to the following address: Cascade Christian School, 601 Ninth Ave. SE, Puyallup, WA 98372.

  • Memories of a Maine childhood

    To the Editor:

The following was a Christmas gift to my elderly father who was a country doctor in Northern Maine where I grew up in the '40s and '50s. Maybe it will recall some fond memories for some of the readers as well. Merry Christmas.

Happy Memories of a Maine Childhood

Raking leaves into piles and jumping into them.

    The smell of burning leaves.

Making houses with rooms, doors and windows out of leaves.

Sunday dinners with cousins and Gram.

  • Thank you, AARP members

    To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to thank the members of AARP’s six chapters here in Maine. Maine is number one in all of New England when it comes to food insecurity. Especially during the winter months many in our state grapple with keeping food on the table. AARP’s six chapters made an extraordinary effort to help by hosting local food drives that support food pantries and other programs such as Meals on Wheels.

  • Feline Fix It Wagon

    To the Editor:

Wow, another year! So many “thank yous” to say. Thanks to a caring community of businesses, veterinarians, individuals, coming together to reduce the number of homeless animals and offering the community much-needed services.

  • New Year's Resolution

    To the Editor:

This year’s developments have certainly vindicated those of us who care about our health, our environment, and our treatment of animals.

In January, first lady Michelle Obama unveiled revamped federal guidelines requiring school cafeterias to serve more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and less sodium and animal fat.

  • Be sensitive during Holy Days

    To the Editor:

The prospect of a big spectacle from the media here in Maine to sensationalize same sex marriage is very disturbing to me, a deeply consecrated biblical Christian.

I am begging the media to be sensitive to evangelical, deeply religious biblical Catholics, deeply religious biblical Jews, and all Muslims true to their faith which says homosexuality is wrong.

It is most unfitting that these groups of people should have to deal with unrighteousness during their Holy Days.

  • Thank you from the Hill family

    To the Editor:

I am writing this letter for Ken Hill Jr., his three sons, parents and all of his family. We would like to thank many people. Thank you to Mallard Mart of West Paris, Breaus II of Bryant Pond and J. J. Variety of Sumner for allowing us to put donation jars in each of your stores.

  • Increasing editorial hubris?

    To the Editor:

I object to the increasingly frequent editorial hubris reflected in this paper's "Our Views" columns. While your Editorial Board has a duty to express its opinions about topical issues, its voice is compromised by ridicule and condescension. In the recent "For Those Philistines Among Us" you chastise a "nescient reader."

  • Empathy not agendas

    To the Editor:

It really says something about a country when even a tragedy such as what happened in Newtown, CT can't bring us together.

Everywhere I look, people are arguing... "we need better gun control," "no we don't need gun control, we need better mental health care," "the media made this happen," "the media is supply and demand, they supply it because America demands it," "this is because they took God out of schools"...

    Are you kidding me?
