Otisfield Social Outreach Committee has new plans
May 09, 2013 12:00 amOTISFIELD — The Otisfield Social Outreach Committee met recently to discuss options to the monthly Community Lunches. Where the food for the lunches has largely been solicited from the community, they wanted to give volunteer cooks and those who work at the lunches a break. It was suggested they try alternating by having a Community Lunch one month and an Activity Day the next month.

If you are an experienced competitor or if you are interested in participating in your first race, you are invited to walk or run on June 2 in the SMH Run for Wellness 5K! This is a great family event and all levels of ability are welcome. Come and walk or run with them, for the health of it!

CASCO — The Vendredi Club of Casco is having its third annual craft fair on November 3 at Crooked River School on Route 11 in Casco, and they want you to be a part of the event. The fair features a wide variety of handcrafts and has space for more crafters who would like to have their unique craft included. Space is limited so commercial products or vendors cannot be accepted.
Maine Audubon seeks anglers for Brook Trout Survey Project
May 09, 2013 12:00 amFALMOUTH — Maine Audubon, Trout Unlimited and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) are seeking volunteer anglers to survey remote ponds in western and northern Maine for brook trout this coming fishing season. Survey information collected by anglers will be used by the nonprofit organizations and IFW to help identify populations of brook trout to be eligible for conservation management practices.
Safe Voices to host Walk to End Domestic Violence
May 09, 2013 12:00 amLEWISTON — Safe Voices will be holding its Walk to End Domestic Violence on Saturday, June 15. The Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston. The purpose of the Walk is to bring awareness to the issue of domestic abuse and support the right of every person to feel safe and live free from violence. All money raised will support services to victims of domestic abuse in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties. Participants raise money by collecting pledges and walking. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with opening ceremony at 10 a.m.

Earl Morse will provide an update on a proposal to send Canadian crude oil through our state to Portland via a pipeline. A discussion will follow.
Colon display at Rumford Hospital
May 09, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD — Rumford Hospital and Sanofi, a multinational pharmaceutical company, have teamed up to present a 12-foot long, 10-foot high human colon display at Rumford Hospital. Those visiting the display can walk through the colon and learn about colon disease and how it is diagnosed and treated.
The display demonstrates the appearance of a healthy colon as well as the effects of various diseases of the colon, including cancer. Information about colorectal cancer prevention, risks, symptoms and screening options will be available.
