  • Learn healthy stir-frying

    NORWAY — The MaineHealth Learning Resource Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) is offering a “Healthy Stir-Frying” Class on Thursday, February 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The program will be held at the First Congregational Church in South Paris. Cost is $10 per person.

  • Roast pork supper slated

    SOUTH PARIS — A pork roast supper will be held Saturday, February 5, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Deering Memorial United Methodist Church on 39 Main Street in South Paris. The cost will be $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. The supper will feature roast loin of pork with chocolate fudge brownies with ice cream for dessert.

    There is ample parking behind the library and town office.

  • Residents complete weeklong service trip

    STANDISH — In January during winter break, 21 faculty, students and family members from Saint Joseph's College of Maine completed a week-long service trip to Guatemala sponsored by the college. In cooperation with Partners in Development of Ipswich, MA, three faculty members and a 17-member student team helped to construct a medical clinic in the tiny village of Concepcion. Members of the group also cleared land for a new community park and volunteered in a local school.

  • Arbor Day Foundation offering free trees

    LOCAL — Residents of Maine can ring in the new year by receiving 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation anytime during January 2011.

    By becoming a member of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, you will receive two white flowering dogwoods, two flowering crabapples, two Washington hawthorns, two American redbuds and two goldenraintrees.

  • MaineHealth at SMH offers exercise sampler

    NORWAY — There is still time to sign up. The MaineHealth Learning Resource Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) is offering a “A Strength and Cardio Exercise Sampler” Class on Saturdays, from February 5 – March 12, from 10-11 a.m. The program will be held at the Personal Best Health Club at 141 Western Ave. in South Paris. Cost is $55 per person and scholarships are available.

  • Learn to Sew program at Norway Memorial Library

    NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library will hold a Learn to Sew program for third — sixth graders on Thursday, February 3, 10 and 17, from 3:15-4:30 p.m.  Pre-registration is required.

  • Red Cross to hold blood drives

    LOCAL — The American Red Cross will be holding local public blood drives on the following days and locations:

    February 2 - American Legion on 26 Casco Road in Naples, from 1 to 6 p.m.

    February 7 - Bridgton Hospital on South High Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    February 16 - United Parish Congregational Church on 77 Main Street in Harrison, from 1 to 6 p.m.

    February 22 - Hosanna Church of God on 109 Schoolhouse Road in Oxford, from 2 to 7 p.m.

  • Oakhurst Dairy makes grant commitment to area schools

    PORTLAND — Maine's Oakhurst Dairy will continue its support of New England kids by funding "Living Natural Goodness" School Grants to area schools. The grants - totaling $10,000 - will be awarded to schools participating in Fuel Up to Play 60, a program launched by the National Dairy Council and the NFL, in collaboration with the USDA.

  • Memoir discussions at Norway Library

    NORWAY — On Thursday, February 17, at 6:30 p.m. the library will return to a discussion of memoirs by American writers with “Wait Till Next Year” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

    Goodwin is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and historian. She is best known for her books “No Ordinary Time” and “Team of Rivals.” “Wait Till Next Year” is her memoir telling of her years growing up in 1950's Brooklyn, NY when baseball truly was the national pastime.
