  • Dempsey Center offers cancer education for kids

    LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free workshop for kids ages five to 12 and their caregivers who have a family member or loved one affected by cancer. “Cancer Education for Kids” will take place Monday, February 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dempsey Center, 10 High Street, Lewiston, Suite 303.

  • Colby College students return from studying abroad

    WATERVILLE — Students from Colby College in Waterville have recently returned from spending the fall semester of the 2010-11 academic year studying abroad.

    Alexandra A. Nichols, a junior, studied in Switzerland at the University of Geneva. Nichols, a graduate of Mount Blue High School, is the daughter of Daren Nichols of Minot, and Jeffrey Bessey and Ashley Hodgdon Bessey of West Farmington. She is majoring in French studies and international studies at Colby.

  • Oxford chili makers sought

    OXFORD — Oxford Recreation is hosting a Chili Challenge on Saturday, February 19 from 12-1 p.m. at the Oxford Station House Community Center. They are looking for residents of Oxford to come forward and show why they feel their chili is the best in town.

  • Adult Ed offers enrichment courses

    MECHANIC FALLS — Mechanic Falls/Minot/Poland Adult Education is offering a variety of enrichment courses this semester.

    AAA Safe Driving for Mature Operators. A video and lecture-based course designed to increase safe driving awareness for those 55 and older. This qualifies for Maine’s mandatory insurance premium discount for 55+ but does not qualify for driving record credit points. Friday, April 15 (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.). Fee $20.

  • Dempsey Center offers family reiki workshop

    LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free reiki workshop for families affected by cancer. “Not Rakey, Reiki!” will take place Thursday, February 3 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at CMMC, 12 High Street, conference room I. The offering is part of the Center’s Healing Tree Children’s Program.

    SMITHFIELD, RI — Kathryn Hall of Poland has been named to the fall semester Dean's List at Bryant University. Hall is a senior finance student.

  • Community Garden kicks off third year

    NORWAY — The Alan Day Community Garden welcomes the public to a Community Meeting on Sunday, January 30, 3-5 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Norway.

    The first order of fun will be a Bulk Seed Order where everyone will get an opportunity to order organic and heirloom seeds at greatly reduced prices. Also there will be a chance to meet organizers, volunteers and future gardeners, help create plans for the 2011 year at the community garden and have some delicious snacks and good fun with folks who are committed to creating a healthier community.

    Truck Driving CDL A & B, with Jerry Verrill begins Tuesday, February 1, 4:15-8 p.m. Cost CDL A: $3,800. Cost CDL B: $2,450.

    Charcoal Drawing with Deb Lewis begins Wednesday, February 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost: $50.

    Candy Making with Becky Wheeler begins Wednesday, February 2, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Cost: $30 with materials fee paid to instructor.
