    HELPING OTHERS — Mary Macie, Crystal White and Nancy Getchell are the coordinators at the Caring Corner Thrift Shop and More, which is located in the basement of the Church of the Nazarene in Mechanic Falls.

  • Hot soup lunch planned in Harrison

    HARRISON — Members and friends of the United Parish Congregational Church of Harrison and North Bridgton plan lunch on Tuesday, February 22, at 12 noon in the church vestry, Main Street in Harrison.

    They’ll be serving hot soup, bread, rolls and dessert, and offering an opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors.

    There is no charge for lunch, but any donations that are received will be given to the Deacons’ Fund, which provides assistance to Harrison and North Bridgton neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.

    Since the town of Industry is a potential wind farm host, I volunteered to join the committee tasked with creating a wind ordinance. To be an effective committee member, I decided to do some research on wind-generated electricity.
    Although I have not formed a hard and fast opinion about the use of wind power in Western Maine, I am attracted to the potential of wind power.
  • Norway ice skating party Friday

    NORWAY — There will be an Ice Skating Party on Friday, February 18 at the Norway ice rink from 6:30-9 p.m. This is open to people of all ages. There will be music, a bonfire and a potluck table for cookies, brownies, etc. and hot chocolate. The ice hut will be open for those who need to borrow ice skates.

    If you have ice skates of any size at home that are no longer needed, they would be happy to take donations. They have ice skates ranging form the small double runners to men’s size 12; by having a variety of sizes available it allows the whole family to skate.

  • GIS mapping topic of SWOAM session

    SOUTH PARIS — GIS mapping will be the topic of a three-hour workshop on Saturday, February 19, sponsored by the western Maine chapter of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine.

    Region 11 Technical School forestry instructor Al Schaeffer will demonstrate Geographic Information Systems mapping and how it can be used for woodlots. Features include boundaries, brooks and streams, timber types, roads and trails, deer yards, potential or actual harvest areas, etc.
