  • Nominate an unsung hero

    AUGUSTA — Governor Paul LePage and The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation recently announced they are now accepting nominations for the Citizen Service Before Self Honors, which recognizes and honors those ordinary Americans who become extraordinary through their indomitable courage and selflessness.

  • RPC Tournament is February 12

    NORWAY — Responsible Pet Care will sponsor a Texas Hold 'em Tournament on Saturday, February 12, at the Norway Municipal Complex, 19 Danforth Street in Norway. The $55 entry fee includes stipend for State license fee. Prizes will be paid to 10 percent of attendance.

    Doors open 11:30 a.m.; start time is 1 p.m. and end time is 5 p.m. Space is limited to 48 participants. Food and beverage will be available. For more information, call 743-8679.

  • 95-year-old vet gives back to others

    CALLING BINGO – Joe Lomonte spends every Monday at the Maine Veteran’s Home calling bingo. He is a 95-year-old veteran who wants to give back to his fellow service men and women.

  • Family ice fishing derby part of Winter Fest

    HARRISON — The Friendly Village of Harrison Winter Fest features the second annual Family Ice Fishing Derby on February 25, 26 and 27. This youth ice fishing event is held in partnership with "Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs."

    Grand prize is a youth lifetime fishing license. Each child under 15 will receive a gift bag or bait and bucket with bait at the boat launch. There will be first, second and third prizes for each category of fish caught, with weight determination.

  • CMP tree care will enhance power-system reliability

    AUGUSTA — A dozen communities in southern Oxford and western Cumberland Counties are among more than 200 cities and towns in central and southern Maine to benefit from Central Maine Power Company’s (CMP) tree care program during the first half of 2011. The work along utility lines is part of a $23 million annual vegetation management program to improve the reliability of its roadside distribution lines.

  • After School Special at the Library

    NORWAY — Kids who like the Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan can sign up for this program based on the Greek god Pan on Tuesday, February 8, from 3:15-4:15 p.m. at the Norway Memorial Library.

    All kids in first through sixth grades are invited to join the After School Special program at the Norway Memorial Library. The February program focuses on the Percy Jackson series and specifically the Greek god Pan.

  • What’s in a name – Jackass Annie Road

    TOWN ROAD — Jackass Annie Road is located off Route 119 in Minot. It leads to some of the highest points in Androscoggin County, and was home to one of Minot’s favorite characters.

  • Nominations open for the Girls Rock! Awards

    WATERVILLE — Hardy Girls Healthy Women is celebrating Maine girls, their bold acts, and their powerful voices during its third annual Girls Rock! Awards.

    This year, five nominees will be honored for making a difference in their community. The awards will be presented to girls from ages 12-19 who are using their voices and hearts to take action, inspire others, and make our state a better place for girls to live and grow.

  • NRCS announces funding opportunity

    BANGOR — State Conservationist Juan Hernandez with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced that up to $100,000 is available in grants for new technology or approaches through Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG). NRCS is seeking grant applications from Maine farmers and landowners; State, tribal and local government entities and non-governmental organizations to help solve Maine's natural resource challenges. The deadline for submitting proposals is February 28.
