Person to person potluck supper in Poland
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amPOLAND — The monthly Person to Person Potluck Supper, hosted by Friends of Ricker Library, will be held in the Community Room of the Poland library on Sunday, February 13. Supper begins at 5:30 p.m. and guests are asked to bring a casserole, salad, or dessert for the table.
Home, Garden show seeks vendors
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amDAMARISCOTTA — Central Lincoln County YMCA will host their second annual Home & Garden Show on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20 and are currently accepting registrations for vendors. This show gives local businesses the opportunity to display their products and services to homeowners and those looking to buy or build. The CLC YMCA has hosted several shows in the past with great success including the Holiday Bazaar, Business to Business Show and the Energy Show. Based on past numbers, they project that more than 2000 people will attend the show over the two-day period.
Skate Fest
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amLIVERMORE -- Maple Lane Restaurant was the setting of the Livermore Falls high School Class of 1967 45th reunion on Aug. 4.
A social hour from 5 to 6 p.m. began the evening, followed by a BBQ buffet supper. Twenty-four classmates were in attendance, accompanied by spouses and guests.
The school colors of green and white were the theme for the tables and the floral centerpieces were supplied and arranged by Barbara Cook. Life-size posters of the original freshman class and posters of past reunions were hung around the dining room.Snow, ice equals heating oil spills
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amAUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is cautioning home owners to check the condition of their outside heating oil tanks. Faced with accumulations of snow and ice on roofs, the DEP is encouraging home owners to carefully clear the snow away from their outdoor tanks. Falling ice from roofs and snow compaction around outdoor heating oil tanks can sever lines and break off filters causing costly spills. A broken off filter or severed fuel line can empty the entire contents of the tank.
Life jackets save lives in cold water too
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amWASHINGTON — The best way to survive an accidental cold water immersion is to wear a life jacket. It will help keep the head above water in the event of an accidental immersion. It will also keep the victim afloat. If unable to rescue themselves, a life jacket can provide some thermal protection against the onset of hypothermia, and keep the swimmer afloat until help arrives.

Scouts offer sewing series
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amSOUTH PARIS — Girl Scouts is offering a “Sewing 101” six-week series for all area girls in grades six to eight. Girls will learn basic sewing techniques, including hand sewing, machine sewing, how to use a pattern, how to handle different textures, and more. During this series, girls will participate in a community service project while honing their new skills. Other projects include a jean patchwork pillow, a pin cushion, or a project of their choice.

AARP meeting scheduled
Feb 10, 2011 12:03 amSOUTH PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet on Monday, February 14 at the First Congregational Church on E. Main Street in South Paris.
Lunch will be a maple glazed pork chop dinner with a Valentine surprise for dessert, to be served at 12 noon. The cost is $6.50 and reservations are required by calling Ruth at 744-9069 by noon on Friday, February 11.
The meeting will begin at 1 p.m., after which Jean Hankins will give a talk on "Dower Laws," pertaining to the rights of widows in the 1800s.
