SeniorsPlus staff gets certification
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amLEWISTON — SeniorsPlus Care Management and Community Services staff and supervisors have achieved the Chronic Care Professional (CCP) certification. The certification was awarded by Health Sciences Institute, St. Petersburg, Florida and is the only nationally recognized program of its type. The CCP credential prepares the SeniorsPlus staff to more effectively work with the needs of people dealing with a long term chronic conditions.

SWOAM presents program
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amSOUTH PARIS — SWOAM (Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine) is sponsoring a meeting at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 on the Maine Tree Growth Tax as well as other current use tax programs such as Open Space and Farmland.
Senior property appraisers from Maine Revenue Services will join Merle Ring, district forester with the Maine Forest Service, to discuss these programs along with bills pending before the Legislature that could affect Tree Growth. The meeting will be in the Forum. The public is welcome and there is no charge.

Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amLOCAL — Celebrate the arrival of spring by planting trees, and the Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for everyone to participate. Join the Arbor Day Foundation in March, and receive 10 free white, flowering dogwood trees.
“White flowering dogwoods will add year-round beauty to your home and neighborhood,” said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dogwoods have showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage and red berries which attract songbirds all winter.”
Kiwanis hosting free electronics drop-off
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amSOUTH PARIS — The Kiwanis Club of Norway-Paris and eWaste Recycling Solutions are again partnering to host a free electronics drop-off from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School parking lot.
“Last year’s event was a huge success,” said Norway-Paris Kiwanis President Becky Toothaker. “We’re hoping to completely fill two or three tractor trailer trucks this year with support from the community for our “Go Green” efforts.”
McLaughlin Garden launches new program
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amSOUTH PARIS — The McLaughlin Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving one of Maine’s renowned gardens and historic homes, is launching a new volunteer program called “House Stewards.”
Ruth Copeman, Executive Director of the Garden, explains that “the term 'house steward' originally meant the 'manager of the staff of a manor or large household.' Our House Stewards will play an equally vital role at McLaughlin Garden as ambassadors to visitors.”

EcoKids begins
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amPLANTING — Cyndy Tinsley explains to kids the benefits that plants and gardens have on the environment and about the Alan Day Community Garden during the Eco Kids program which began March 10. Each participant planted a scarlet runner bean to take home and care for over the summer. The program continues on Thursday, March 24 with a recycling and art program led by Rijah Newell. If your child would like to participate please call the library at 743-5309 ext. 4 to register.
Sap gathering contest scheduled
Mar 17, 2011 12:21 amWATERFORD — Come and enjoy the day with the Farmers Draft Horse, Mule and Pond Club on Sunday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waterford Fairgrounds. Watch the teamsters as they gather sap from the pails and empty it into a tank that is on a horse-drawn sled. Then they will navigate their way through the course to the final stop at a weigh station. Each teamster will be allowed one helper on the course and will be judged on handiness of team, amount of sap gathered and overall quality of gathering technique.
