  • Fund established at Bethel Historical Society

    BETHEL — On January 24, the Bethel Historical Society’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to create the “Florence Bickford Hastings Traditional Crafts Fund.” This interest-generating Fund - originally established to name a planned crafts room in the expanded Robinson House - includes many generous gifts in Mrs. Hastings’ name received by the Society from her family and friends.

  • Supper, dance scheduled

    SOUTH PARIS — A smorgasbord supper and dance is scheduled on Saturday, April 2 at the South Paris Legion Hall on Church Street. The supper will be from 5 to 6 p.m. with a cost of $7. The dance, with the Jones Dance Band, will start at 6:30 p.m. and the cost is $5.

    Dances with the Jones Band are also scheduled for April 9, 16, 23, and 30, from 7 to 10 p.m. The cost will be $5 and the lunch counter will be open.

  • Workshop offers nutrition topics

    BETHEL — Cathi DiCocco, local chef and frequent presenter on food topics, will hold two workshops as part of the Western Mountain Senior College (WMSC) “To Your Health” series. DiCocco, who has a degree in Home Economics Education, said her goal is to educate people about the importance of their food choices, not only for their personal health for also for the health of the community and the planet. She holds a variety of tasting workshops and educational sessions throughout the year.

    AUGUSTA — World TB Day is observed on March 24 each year to commemorate the day in 1882 when Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB). This year, the U.S. theme TB elimination: Together We Can! envisions a time when this disease no longer exists.

    Yard sale

    SOUTH PARIS — American Legion Post 72 will hold a yard sale on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Post on Church Street in South Paris. The lunch counter will be open and there will also be 50/50 tickets.

  • Eco Kids learn about recycling

    PENGUINS — The Eco Kids program at the Norway Memorial Library concluded on March 24th with a presentation by Delsey Andrews, who was representing the “Trash Into Art” group from Norway, Maine. For a final activity the children worked together to create a work of art that shows why recycling is important. The children created a large model of the earth, complete with the North Pole and animals that are being affected by climate change all from recycled materials. Some of the children who participated are wearing penguin hats in this photo to represent the South Pole.

  • Students, staff offer ideas to save money

    OXFORD HILLS – Due to recent budget cuts, not only are parents and staff worried about things changing around the Oxford School District, but students have been voicing their opinions as well.

    Lilly Bourget, a sophmore in OHCHS, said that the district was thinking of combining bus routes, possibly a single bus run, starting the next school year.

    According to the district webiste. currently the school has 57 bus runs (30 elementary school, 27 middle school/high school), so instead of averaging 777,000 miles, it can knock it down to 527,000 miles.
