    NORWAY — Western Maine Health Vice President of Clinical Services M. Patricia Cook announced recently that six employees of Western Maine Health have been awarded scholarships for further education.

    NORWAY — The MaineHealth Learning Resource Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) offers Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques to be held on Wednesday, April 27 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The program will be held in the Harper Conference Center in The Ripley Medical Building.

  • Volunteers needed for trail maintenance

    BRIDGTON — Loon Echo Land Trust needs volunteers to help with spring trail maintenance on the Ledges Trail of its Pleasant Mountain Preserve. Each year, Loon Echo staff is joined by the Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and a group of hardy volunteers to prepare the popular trail for the hiking season. This year, the trail work day is set for Saturday, April 23.

    Benefit supper

    FRYEBURG — A benefit supper for Bryson Herlihy and family will be held Saturday, April 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Fryeburg. Bryson is a two-year-old with Ewings sarcoma, a rare type of cancer. He has had surgery and is in a full body cast and continues chemo treatments.

    The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. The menu includes casseroles, salads, baked beans, rolls, beverages and desert. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and a Chinese auction table.

  • Safe Voices hosts walk

    LEWISTON — Safe Voices, formerly the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project (AWAP), will be holding its Walk to End Domestic Violence on Saturday, May 14 at Simard-Payne Police Memorial Park in Lewiston. The purpose of the Walk is to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence and support the right of every person to feel safe and live free from violence. All money raised will support services to victims of domestic abuse in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties. Participants raise money by collecting pledges and walking one of two courses.

    BRIDGTON — Loon Echo Land Trust recently announced plans for its annual Earth Day celebration on Friday, April 22. Earth Day, founded in 1970 by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, intends to inspire awareness and appreciation for the natural environment, and it is celebrated in more than 175 countries each year.

  • Foundation grants available

    NORWAY — The Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation has announced it is now accepting applications for grants. Applications will be accepted until June 27 and awards decided by July 29.

    Eligibility requirements for grants from the Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation are tied to sustainable healthcare initiatives which are limited to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations based in the Stephens Memorial Hospital service area.

  • Senior writing workshop offered

    HARRISON — Harrison Recreation is sponsoring a senior writing class to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on three Friday afternoons, April 22, 29 and May 6, at the fire station Community Room in Harrison.

    Everyone has them, lots of them. Join with others in telling the story behind a cherished object or photograph, a childhood haunt, your favorite teacher, rainy day activities, an embarrassing moment, a true friend, paper dolls, paper airplanes, first car, senior prom, report cards - you get the idea. No doom and gloom allowed here. The instructor is T. Jewell Collins, local writer.

  • Blood drive today

    SOUTH PARIS — The annual Oxford Hills Community American Red Cross blood drive, sponsored by the Western Maine Veterans' Advisory Committee (WMVAC), will be held Thursday, April 21 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Maine Veterans' Home, 477 High ST. in South Paris.
