The event was organized to introduce kids to ice fishing by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Volunteers from Sebago Lake Rotary drilled fishing holes for the event. According to Howard, this is his first time ice fishing. Range Pond park officials said the cold weather created ideal conditions for the event.

  • McLaughlin lecture is on woodland plants

PARIS — Mike Murphy of West Paris will present an illustrated lecture on Wednesday, February 27 on “Woodland Plants.” Because the diversity of perennials available to gardeners is at an all-time high, Murphy will make suggestions for shady places.

These include uncommon perennials which are right at home in Maine gardens including trilliums, primroses and lady slippers. Murphy plans to reopen Wake Robin Nursery this spring.

  • Military helps young people achieve success

OXFORD HILLS —   It has been drilled into the heads of today’s youth that without a college education, a young person will not be able to get a good job, succeed and prosper in life.

As the economy has gone down and prices have gone up, the cost of a college education has gone up as well. Achieving that “success” has seemingly become more and more of an unattainable goal.

Another viable option considered and quite often chosen, by high school students, is the military.
