  • Cancer awareness day planned in West Paris

    WEST PARIS — The "Aurora Shines Cancer Awareness Day" will be held Saturday, May 21 in West Paris. This awareness/fundraising event is facilitated by Ardith Dechello, whose sister Aurora is the inspiration for the event. Aurora had battled two types of cancer and is now fighting stage two brain cancer.

  • Saving the Union event held

    LINCOLN REMEMBERED — On Friday, April 15, members of Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War from Tent #17 of Bryant Pond, Tend #19 of Stoneham, and Tent #23 of Abbott, traveled to Augusta to attend "Saving the Union, The Call for Volunteers." This event commemorated the 150th anniversaty of President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation ordering states to call forth a Militia following the bombardment of Fort Sumter; the start of the Civil War.

  • AARP driver class set

    BRIDGTON — An AARP driver safety class for drivers age 50 and older, sponsored by the Bridgton Hospital, will be presented from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Bridgton Community Center, 15 Depot St. in Bridgton on Monday, June 6.

    The registration fee is $12 for AARP members, $14 for others. Advance registration is required as class size is limited. To register, phone John Hammon, volunteer instructor, at 655-4943.

    LUNCH CELEBRATION — American Legion Auxiliary of Unit #72 joined Unit #82 and other Units to celebrate Carlene Ashworth, National President and Nancy True, State Department President, who visited the Oxford Hills area on April 14. A plentiful luncheon buffet was served and gifts were offered. Unit #72 representatives were Elsi Pechnik, Sylvia Michaud-Kessell and Joyce Linindoll.

  • Thrift Shop needs donations

    BRIDGTON — Spring cleaning? Down-sizing? Just "making room?" Then volunteer manager Emily Hammerlee of the Bridgton Hospital Guild Thrift Shop reminds you that they welcome your gently used clothing for women, children and men, as well as china, glassware, knick-knacks and decorative items, for their Main Street, Bridgton, shop.

    The Thrift Shop is conveniently located across from TD Bank and next to Reny's, in downtown Bridgton, and Mrs. Hammerlee and her staff will welcome your donations and provide you a tax deductible receipt - all with a smile.

  • Changing the world, one pair at a time

    FULL OF SOUL – These students from the National Honor Society at OHCHS have been collecting shoes for their community service project. They will be sending them to Soles4Souls to be distributed throughout the world to needy countries and relief efforts.   • Accepting vendor applications

    PARIS — The Hamlin Memorial Library & Museum is still accepting vendor applications for its annual Founder’s Day event which will take place on Saturday, July 16.

  • Land Trust to hold 16th annual migratory bird walk

    NORWAY — While it is increasingly hard these days to anticipate changing climate trends, one can generally depend upon birds to keep to their migratory schedules as their patterns are influenced by daylight hours rather than temperature. For example, even with this year’s cold and damp spring, Bob and Mary Van Nest recorded the annual return of towees to their Norway farm within a day of the 2010 towee return date.

  • Center offers nutrition workshop

    LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free nutrition workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Even Small Changes Make a Difference," presented by Meg Wolff, will take place Wednesday, May 18 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. at CMMC, 12 High Street in conference room A. A book signing will follow the presentation from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
