  • 9/11 to be remembered - 10 years later

    REMEMBERING — Joe Bernard, a Marine Corps Vet, looks over the schedule of the Anniversary Remembrance of 9/11 with co-chairs, Linda Jack and Doreen Tibbetts. The ceremony will take place at the Oxford Hannaford and will honor those who gave their life that day as well as acknowledge all those first responders, who daily risk their lives for our continued safety.

  • Community Concepts receives grant to help transport veterans

    AREA — Through the Maine Community Foundation, Community Concepts has received a grant of $15,000 from the Tibor and Anna Doby Veteran support fund.

    Tibor and Anna Doby barely escaped the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Through the trials they endured before being granted political asylum in the US, they came to know firsthand the devastating effects of war. Over time the Dobys developed an interest in the American soldiers who served in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Through their estate, they have provided support to Maine veterans and their families.

  • County Dems reschedule BBQ

    BRYANT POND — The Oxford County Democrats summer BBQ has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 18 at the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Leadership Center in Bryant Pond.

    The event was originally set for August 28 but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Irene. Congressman Mike Michaud has confirmed for the new date, and former Secretary of State Matt Dunlap of Old Town and Rep. Jon Hinck of Portland, both potential contenders for the Democratic nomination for US Senate in 2012, will be in attendance.

  • Dempsey Center offers workshop

    LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free positive thinking workshop to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. "Staying Positive in Challenging Times" will take place Tuesday, September 20 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at CMMC, 12 High Street, Lewiston in conference room D.

  • Register now for Board Development workshop

    NORWAY — With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Maine Arts Commission will sponsor a series of free board development and leadership training sessions across the state. Locally, a Board Development workshop will be held Friday, September 9 at the Lajos Matokcsy Arts Center, Main St. in Norway.

  • Humming ... moth?

    HUMMING – It would be pretty difficult for most gardeners to believe this gorgeous creature was not an immature hummingbird with its quick, clear wings and bright colors hovering around the bee balm darting from flower-to-flower collecting nectar. Bu this visitor to a local garden was actually a sphinx moth, commonly called a clear-wing hummingbird moth because of its similarities to the tiny bird. The moth’s colors are quite vibrant and their wings have even been known to flap 30 times per minute

  • Bethel Harvest Fest, Chowdah Cook-off set

    BETHEL — Delectable chowders produced by local restaurant chefs as well as locally grown loaded hot baked potatoes will make the trip to Bethel on Saturday, September 17 well worth it - for the 14th Annual Bethel Harvestfest and Chowdah Cookoff on the Bethel Common presented by Lay’s. Additionally, local apple pie chefs will pull out all the stops to compete for Good Food Store gift certificates.

  • Geo River Kids

    SOUTH PARIS — On Tuesday, September 13 at 11 a.m., the Paris Public Library invites homeschoolers and families to an informational program regarding this year's Geography and Cultural Studies Program. The 2011-2012 school year will focus on the world's major rivers with a heavy focus on the Mississippi River along with its effects on the surrounding land areas, its people and wildlife.

  • Swingin' Bears opens fall season

    SOUTH PARIS — The Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club of South Paris announces that Ray Hilton of Saco is its new club caller and will open the fall season on Saturday, September 10 from 7-10 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Middle School, Pine Street in South Paris. He will be calling Mainstream/ Mainstream Plus level for the square dancing and Carol Stewart of Dresden will cue the round dancing. Hosts for the evening are Nancy and Fred Engdahl of Waterford and Russ and Fay Perham of Oxford. There will be door prizes and Pot 'O Gold drawing. Admission is $6 per person.
