Checkers
Apr 25, 2013 12:00 amThe clock hands said, "Old Jim's late."
Pointing like that, to half past eight.
Thirty-three years, there or about,
Before the hands turned eight
I'd have the old board out,
Pull up the other chair and wait,
Look out past the porch light —
Watch Jim kick my gate.
Swift kick, clean through —
Left foot halfway to my door;
Gate, hidden in the fence pots,
Closed no more 'Til I, some errand to run,
(The number living here but one)
Returned to mouth its squeaking tongue.
