Burglaries jump 16 percent in rural Maine

STATE — Drug use is the driving factor behind an increase in rural crime rates, say state and local law enforcement officials.
In just one year, prescription drug abuse has helped to fuel a 16 percent increase in burglaries in rural towns.
Numbers released by the Maine Department of Public Safety last week show a 3.6 percent increase in crime rate across the state.

NORWAY — Norway police responded to a call on Packard Avenue on a report that vandals had targeted the house of a local resident with eggs and a small, makeshift explosive.
Officer Robert Federico II responded to the call at 9:50 a.m on Monday, after Andrea Burns of Norway called in to report that she had awoken to discover eggs stuck to the side of her house, her screen door torn, and a large plastic bottle that had been blown apart.
Naples boy elevated to fair condition after shooting
May 26, 2011 12:00 amNAPLES — A nine-year-old Naples boy was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland on Thursday, May 19, with what responders described as a "life-threatening" head injury.
Gavin Gilmore was reportedly struck in the head with a .177 caliber pellet fired by his uncle, 26-year-old Daniel McGill, which lodged in the front of his brain.
According to Maine Medical Center, Gilmore's condition had been upgraded to "fair," as of Tuesday, meaning that vital signs were stable and Gilmore was conscious.
