  • Not-so-good old days

    The April 26, 1861 issue of the Oxford Democrat proudly announced the area's reaction to the "traitors" in the secessionist state of South Carolina, who fired on U.S. Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC, on April 12. Proudly, the paper noted the local men's rush to the colors.

    04:48 – Gregory M. Sessions, born 5-24-57, of 77 East Bethel Road, Bethel, was arrested at 77 East Bethel Road by Oxford County Deputy Robert Ryder and charged with Assault Domestic.

  • Not-so-good old days

    The year 1861 was fraught with examples of man's inhumanity to his fellow man. Shots fired on April 12, 1861, South Carolina militia at the U.S Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, heralded the start of the Civil War, a conflict that resulted in enormous cost of life.

    But here in Western Maine, people didn't need to go far afield to see horrible experiences and overwhelming grief.

    Disease provided plenty, as the Oxford Democrat reported on April 5, 1861:

    12:30 – Robert Michael Leduc, born 11-20-67, of 169 Highland Terrace, Mexico, was arrested on 5th St by Mexico Police Officer Josh Aylward and charged with Assault Domestic.

  • Autopsy concluded in shooting death

    BUCKFIELD — The state medical examiner's office has concluded the autopsy of a 51-year old Buckfield resident who died of a gunshot wound on April 20.

    Steve McCausland, a spokesman from the state police, said that they were not releasing the results of the autopsy yet, and that the shooting death is still under investigation by the state police.

    Gregg Belanger's ex-wife, Denise Belanger, called police to Belanger's house at 8:30 on the night of Wednesday, April 20 after discovering the body.
