    09:55 – Timothy Michael Holland Jr., born 9-27-82, of 20 Dolloff St., Peru, was arrested in Peru by Maine State Trooper Kyle Tilsley and charged with Failure to Appear.

    Saturday, May 21

    07:10 – Richard K. Bradley, born 6-4-54, of 485 Tuell Hill Rd.,Sumner, was arrested at 485 Tuell Hill Rd. by Oxford County Deputy Robert Ryder and charged with DV Assault (D).

    This week's selection of the woes of old might seem at first glance to be a "good new" item.  However, reflection on the social and ethical issues that allowed it all to happen could swing one's thinking the other way.  Certainly it seems rather recent for such an abduction/adoption to have taken place here in the east, where the "Indian Wars" were already in the Oxford County Democrat on September 21, 1847.

  • Burglaries jump 16 percent in rural Maine

    Prescription drug abuse cited as cause

    STATE — Drug use is the driving factor behind an increase in rural crime rates, say state and local law enforcement officials.

    In just one year, prescription drug abuse has helped to fuel a 16 percent increase in burglaries in rural towns.

    Numbers released by the Maine Department of Public Safety last week show a 3.6 percent increase in crime rate across the state.

    16:33 – Matthew L. Martin, born 5-6-80, of 2 Michael Drive, Norway, was arrested in Norway by Norway Police Officer R. Federico II and charged with Violation of Bail Conditions and Terrorizing.

  • NORWAY — Norway police responded to a call on Packard Avenue on a report that vandals had targeted the house of a local resident with eggs and a small, makeshift explosive.

    Officer Robert Federico II responded to the call at 9:50 a.m on Monday, after Andrea Burns of Norway called in to report that she had awoken to discover eggs stuck to the side of her house, her screen door torn, and a large plastic bottle that had been blown apart.

  • Naples boy elevated to fair condition after shooting

    NAPLES — A nine-year-old Naples boy was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland on Thursday, May 19, with what responders described as a "life-threatening" head injury.

    Gavin Gilmore was reportedly struck in the head with a .177 caliber pellet fired by his uncle, 26-year-old Daniel McGill, which lodged in the front of his brain.

    According to Maine Medical Center, Gilmore's condition had been upgraded to "fair," as of Tuesday, meaning that vital signs were stable and Gilmore was conscious.

    01:15 – Mandy Ann Files, born 3-30-84, of PO Box 324, Harrison, was arrested on Main St. by Paris Police Officer Mike Dailey and charged with Failure to Appear.

    01:16 – Christopher Lee Baxter, born 11-23-78, of 158 Route 108, Rumford, was arrested on Crescent Ave. by Rumford Police Officer Bradlee Gallant and charged with Failure to Appear and Operating Without License.
