Crime

  • Noot-so-good old days

In this column on April 19, we presented an account of conditions of seafarers in 1850. Our further research brought forth this Oxford Democrat's editorial/news item from five years earlier, on May 13, 1845:

    Cruelty in the Navy

We find the following in a late number of the Old Dominion, and we ask with amazement if the charge can be true? Without the present efficient Secretary, ascertain the facts in the case?

  • Not-so-good old days

Rioting students and an error at an execution — last week's news? No, try "century-before-yester-century's" news.

The Oxford Democrat, despite the significance to modern readers, was staunchly what today would be called "conservative" in its editorial policy. The 1840s were a period of time in which most Americans were too distracted by new discoveries, an ever-advancing frontier and survival to dwell on the inherent injustices of slavery and the occupation of Native Americans' land, but not too distracted to ignore breaking news.

  • Not-so-good old days

Our ancestors of the 1850s were pretty much as aware of how things really worked in the nation's capital as we are today. The only difference seems to be that in the 1850s "dog-and-pony shows" actually were a familiar form of traveling entertainment.

But that's not to say the as-yet-unnamed "military-industrial complex" hadn't already perfected the art of presenting one to important members of Congress at budget time, as the May 2, 1856 Oxford Democrat reported:
